I have a 2000 Valk Interstate with 51,000 trouble free miles and this Sunday I developed some type of problem. During the last 10 miles of a 135 mile ride I began to notice a metallic type chattering sound coming from the rear of the bike. It is not at all noticeable during acceleration but only when I am slowing down to come to a stop. It seems that it is most noticeable when I apply the rear brakes although it is still there when I am slowing with downshifting and not yet applying the brakes. I did check the rear brake pads and they appear to be fine. Has anyone had a similiar problem?? Would appreciate any insight into the cause. Thanks!

Until you can identify the source of the noise there will be a multitude of suggestions that will cause you to worry unnecessarily so.
I would suggest you find that source.
A rider on the back may be able to get to the source a lot easier than you can.
If you were to use a short section of garden hose, it would make it a lot better to pinpoint the source. Put it to you ear like a stethoscope.
There are many other ways to help you to find the source of noise, rattles and squeaks.

From other folks posts, I'd guess you may have a U joint beginning to fail. Is there a vibration when you get the noise? Do a slow roll in first gear. Roll the throttle on and off gently. Is there more slack in the drive train than there use to be? Not too hard to change at home. Good luck.

Thanks alot guys! Yes it does vibrate somewhat when coming to a stop. It appears that the U-Joint is a good educated guess and I appreciate it. I may bring it to the dealer on Sat.(first come-first serve basis) and have them look at it. The only other ? I have is does anybody know how big of a job this is? and is there anything else I should have them take a look at while they are working on it? I readily admit to being a mechanically challenged individual.

I would remove the rear wheel, final drive, and drive shaft. This will give you a look at all the probable parts, but......I suspect the U-Joint

An earlier post reflected that the dealership might try to pull the swing arm to service the u-joint. You do not need to from what information is available here.
I recently had to track down an odd vibration - ( left rear bearing ) but took the opportunity to pull the shaft and get a look at what it takes to service the U-joint.
Check and see if someone in your area wants to pull a tech day, or print out the pics and see if the mechanic at the shop will follow the steps that don't require pulling your swing-arm.
I worked along side the mechanic at SARGES in Columbia TN. Real nice guy, and didn't mind the extra eyes and hands because he doesn't see a lot of valks.

The fact that you said it increased when you used the rear brake tends to make me think bearing. Maybe someon near you can help you do it yourself. Dealers want $75-80 per hr. nowadays to troubleshoot.

I have the same thing going on with my '97 Valk, 93,000 miles. Had it to the local dealer and bearings replaced as well as the hub replaced and the rubber buffers that the teeth work agains. Yesterday as I was riding home the grinding or rubbing sound was there again, four times in a ten mile ride. The dealer also said the u-joint was fine. It will be going back as the noise has me worried and I have several rides planned.

Without finding where the noise is emanating, all help is just a "stab in the dark".
I think it's your tail light assembly rattling because it's loose on the fender Senor!

Thanks so much for all your input. I'm taking it in tommorrow and will let you know the outcome. Also, special thanks to Sandy for the Rattelbar link which was real helpful and as a result I was able to find out the part costs $90.68 from HDL. I have to go now and check on my rear tailight that Ricky-D said might be loose. I was going to go to the Blue/Grey Valk Ride in Gettysburg this weekend but it doesn't look that way now with the problem.

I just got back from the Honda Dealer and I have had excellent service with this particular dealer which is Planet Honda in Chadds Ford, PA. They checked the bike out for me (no charge) and determined that the rear brake caliber needs to be rebuilt. They ordered the parts ($121) and will call me when they come in to schedule for service. I just wanted to post this in case anyone else could benefit from the experience. Sound I was getting when applying the rear brake was a metallic chattering sound. Since this is the very first problem I have had with bike at 53,000 I definitely have no complaints and I can't say the same for my '02 Road King that I sold 3 months ago with only 1/2 as many miles. Thanks for all your input!
