I've been doing some reading and, as I understand it, the cams on my California 1998 Standard are not making as much power as those found on bikes from other states.

Would swapping to 49 state cams produce a noticeable gain in power?

Where would I find a set?

It's not that I'm unhappy with the Mothership as she is, far from it...it's just that it bugs me to know that I could have more, in stock Honda trim, no less.  Also, I find the thought that she might not be able to keep up with other stock Valkyries unacceptable.

Any advice/opinions are appreciated.

No, I'm looking for input from someone who knows more than I do on the subject.

see post # 72 only person I have ever seen that actually tried both cams

to find a set, ebay, probably a complete head would be cheapest, since a dealer would be the only way to get new.

there also are aftermarket cams for GL1500s and valkyries.

my friend has a 99 I/S 49 state and i have a 2k I/S California. both desmogged, both syncd the same.
we get exactly the same milage and both run exactly the same on acceleration.
both complete stock except for K&N filters no prefilter.

so based on OUR experience, no difference. we have traveled thousands of miles together.

hope this helps Smiley

If you are afraid of someone clouding up and raining on ya, hang a Blower on it.

There will always be someone or some thing that will click your drawers for ya.

If ya really want speed, go get a Suzuki Hayabusa (sp), they are guaranteed like 150 mph out of the box.

If ya do get some more ponies under her belt, only thing you will gain is more of them go visit the Judge free cards, thatt will put a dent in your pocketbook.

Ya can't outrun everything, no matter what ya get, and the worst one is the Motorola, it is not out runable.   You will have to trust this old retired CHP on that.

PS:   Really all we want is your tag#, then we will be waiting in your driveway when ya get home.

Thanks for the update on the out of the box MPH.

Saw 1 run at a drag strip once, and I've ridden a lot of miles on a motor, but no way in hell do I want to toss a leg over that rig.      It is just a place waiting to happen in my book.
