I know you are a Cannon guy, so out of curiosity, what point and shoot did you get?
I did a lot of research and was leaning towards the Sony RX100 due to a huge image sensor but the price tag is intimidating for a point-n-shoot. I considered the Nikon 1 due to the interchangeable lens system until I realized that would be like starting over; besides the fact that it wasn't very pocketable with a lens attached.
I bought the Canon G15; mostly due to the bright 1.8 - 2.8 lens and advanced IS accounting for four F-stops, making it an good choice for distant and low-light photography. A plus is the menu is almost identical to my T2i and 7D, minus a few adjustments. I also liked the fact that IS works with video and I can zoom and focus during video recording. So far I am impressed with its performance; it will fit in a pocket but does display an impressive bulge.

Jimmy, I've been a Canon guy since the 70's and I am biased. If you are starting from scratch the Sony RX100 is $650 - $700 depending on your willingness to shop and it is the favorite on most of the popular camera comparison sites, just barely beating out the Canon G15. Again, I went with the Canon due to familiarity and low-light performance, your needs may be different. Nikon makes some very nice camera's and I would buy many of them if I didn't have a couple of camera bags full of Canon gear already. I've spent the last couple of weeks researching p-n-s camera's so if you tell what your needs are I can send you to some sites that you can read to edumakate(sp) yourself.
This is one of my favorite comparison sites
