No drawbridges.  Honestly, the island seemed to me to be poorly protected and vulnerable.  There appear to be three points of paved egress as well as the La Crosse Municipal Airport.

According to the chief of police there are only two exits from the island.  Although you could make a get-away by boat or plane.

Clinton street exits into La Crosse.   Sometimes those LEO's give you incomplete info.   Wink

I'll give the chief the benefit of the doubt, to quote him, "there are only two ways off the island."  Perhaps he meant there are only two roads off the island (I-90 and Clinton St.)

The structure just across the street is the Campbell, Wisconsin municipal center housing the library, fire department, and police force.

Little warning for the ride...not sure what I90 is like on a Valk, but in my rig it's AWFUL.  Concrete and every single one of the sections is uneven to it's mate.  So it's just ka-wham, ka-wham, ka-wham for what seems like ever. I would advise perhaps taking secondary roads to an from GZ.

Who knows though, maybe the wheelbase on the Valk is just perfect for these sections and you won't even feel it.

Good deal though. I live in central IL and both of my sisters and my nephews and neice live in Madison. Sun Prarie actually so I shall visit them on my way there.
MAN, that will be just like I10 in Louisiana!  They fixed the part that is from the TX border until Exit 44, the Coushatta casino exit...  Cheesy

Perhaps it was the vehicle, or the particular stretch of road, but I didn't notice any roughness to the pavement on I-90.  I came in from the west.

As far as secondary roads in the area are concerned, you  might want to take some just for the sheer enjoyment of the ride.  There are some beautiful rides around La Crosse.

...And one leads up to Top Dawgs; 108 different kinds of burgers....and lots of Wisconsin beer on tap. Legend has it it's 108 because that's the road they're on.

My favorite lunch stop on my Sunday rides.

WI 35 (GRR) north to Prescott, from LC is a fun ride...lots of quaint small towns and all are motorcycle friendly.
Gonna be a hoot!!!

It appears that J&P Cycles is roughly 150 miles south riding along the river most of the way.  A few years ago I was invited by some family to meet in Milwaukee and ride to the HUGE open house/rally at J&P.  Sadly I wasn't able to go but heard alot of great stuff about the place.

I guess the showroom is unreal. Perhaps some of you would be up for a ride there?  I would most certainly enjoy it.

There are many nice rides in the area. The only downside is that you have to go around or through La Crosse to get to most of them. The VOAI has had two ride-ins there (one 3 years ago) and it went very well.

I90 isn't a problem with anything I've ridden/driven on it.
