yesterday I pulled the old belts off BUT before I did I took a few pics with a digital camera to make sure it got put back right. when I took the PG's off I'm sure I put them back where they came off. BUT when I got it buttoned back up no spark, and so no firing.

is it possible I mixed them up? are there other things I should be looking for?

Don't know if you can mix them up. There is a long lead and a short lead, the long lead is the PG on the bottom. Check the wires, maybe one was pinched or broken, clean the pickup areas. Good luck.

Tom, why did you take them off? Not necessary when you change the belts.

No spark ? What the heck happened ? If you unbolted and just let the generators hang then its about impossible to re-mount them incorrectly. You didn't remove the crankshaft sprockets did you ? The generator to trigger wheel gap should be in the .020" range. If for some reason you removed the crank sprockets, let us know.
Kinda regardless of how things were put back together there should be spark. It may not be when it should be, but, you should still have it.
Off the spark issue. Make sure the valve/cam timing is correct before starting the engine. When adjusting the belt tension, I leave them a bit on the loose side. These engines stretch like crazy and the little extra slack keeps the belts quieter. Honda spec is .2-.3" . I tend to set them at 3/8-7/16".

I did it per the clymer manual, and it looked too tight to get them between the PG's and the crank.

no didn't touch the crank at all, well just to align the timing marks.

I have to ask this question just to make sure. How are you checking for spark ? The sparkler has to be grounded.
It sounds as though you having been trying to start this monster with no success. I'd now recommend a compression test.

I hate to say it, I assumed there was no spark, but now I have confirmation. I put the plugs back in and tested by pulling one plug wire off and holding it to the intake flange. no sparky.

it has to be the pulse gens, maybe a wire did get pinched

Just for the heck of it, charge the battery or jump it. If the battery gets low on these critters, the starter will draw enough to effectively shut down the ignition system. There have been a couple generator failures over the years, so its possible you may have a bad one. But thats been very rare.
There is a test in the Honda manual for the generators, I've never had to go thru it so I can't tell you how to do it without reading it myself.

looks like it was an issue with the top gen was out of the alignment hole just a bit. I noticed it's alot closer then it was the first time.

put the plugs in it and it fired right up!  cooldude

Checking pulse generators is easy and noninvasive. Here is a picture that shows this procedure.
