Dot 3 and 4 are compatible. Dot 3 has a lower boiling point. I don't think it's relevant on the Valk, but some do. Anyway, I'd use fresh dot3 before I'd use dot 4 that's been open for years.
Or, ya could go grab a fresh bottle of dot4.

Yep, what Daniel said. Brake fluid draws water like crazy, so the fresher the better. #3 will work fine, but, if you can get a new can of #4 do it. Any Auto store should have it.

at 9am could not find store with dot 4 so used what I had and it looked like new
changed the caliper out as the old one had fubar screw over the pin thanks Valker
Still some air in the system will let it sit for a day and bleed it again
I will probably change the fluid before leaving for inzane with fresh dot 4

"I will probably change the fluid before leaving for inzane with fresh dot 4" I would say that would be a smart move my wise friend. Hope to see you there.

you should be good for a year on fresh DOT 3 fluid...monitor the color through the port and you'll be OK. When you change, look for Valvoline DOT 3/4 (the specs show DOT 4 but compatible with DOT 3). It used to be called SynPower, but they no longer use that name. Some of the specs changed slightly but it will work well in your bike. It also comes in smaller bottles so you don't have to throw a lot away. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Valvoline-12-oz-DOT-3-and-4-synthetic-brake-fluid/_/N-25ah?itemIdentifier=33408_0_0_I'm sure there are a lot of other products but this has served me well. I use it in all of my bikes and most of my buddies do too. Good luck

Evan...pump the lever a couple of times and hold it back, tie it back with a cable tie and let it sit over night, all the air in the line will be gone by morning and the lever will be right at the top...

However Do Not Use Dot 5 as I guarentee you it will turn to jelly. I bought a Venture once where the fool added dot 5 cause he said it would be better. I had to pull everything apart and the cleaning was a royal pain in the arsh.

Question.........
Recently bought a quart bottle and changed fluid in both brakes and clutch. Put the plastic jug in a freezer baggy and sealed it. How long would the remaining fluid be okay to use stored like that?
