Going to attempt to explain this the best I can.

Got on the horse tonight to run to store.
--- Key on; lights came on.
--- Found neutral, indicator light on.
--- Toggled run switch; all still good.
--- Pushed starter button, starter engaged for a few seconds and stopped.
No electrical anywhere.

Meter checked 55 amp main fuse, 12V in / 12V out - all is good there.
No 12V at fuses in block.
No 12V to switches on handlebar.
No 12V to accessory connections.


Is there a fuse link or a relay after the 55 amp main fuse?
Is there something I am missing before I have to trailer this to my repair shop?

Yes, there is.  The 30 amp main fuse located on top of the starter relay.  The relay and contacts are often corroded and burn out the fuse.  A search for starter relay should pull up many instances of this.

Someone pointed out later, that the entire relay sits in a rubber mount which can be slid out. The red piece gets corroded and melts.

Can you tell us how you built and installed the panel behind the right side cover?

Looks great for extra relays and gadgets..!!

What they said.  Check the connectors on the 30A fuse, probably find them corroded or burnt.

a friends 97 completely melted when I did a search for info it seemed that a lot of 97s did the same thing on ebay I  saw the whole block that the switch is in with or without the connecting wires

I had this fail in the spring of '08 while on my first road trip on my '98 Tourer.  Actually the connector on the wiring harness mostly melted in place and I could not get it off.  You can start the bike by jumpering across the connections on the top of the starter relay with a screw driver.  Once home I replaced the OEM connector with individual spade connectors and replaced the starter relay for good measure.  No more issues since than.       

Chris, great video!  I saw your accessory power panel at Inzane XII last year.  I thought it was a great idea and proceeded to build my own version of it this last winter.  Hope to see you at Inzane XIII.  We do not have so far to go this year.  Actually, less than 70 miles for me.   Smiley

OK, FOLKS!
This one was a really "dummy" one on my part!
Seems that without a load tester, the battery test is not a good determination if a battery is good.
Also seems that there is something in the circuit of the `97 that unless you are 10.5 amps of cranking power, the entire system, lights, etc. kick out.

I putzed with everything, including the 30amp starter fuse (real mother to get out on mine) - thank you CHRISE.  I grabbed a trailer from U-Haul, ran the horse up to AJ's on Deer Valley Road (my go to x-HA that is a real champ of a mechanic God).

As I explained the situation to one of the other guys, waiting for Larry to get done at the bench, I heard this voice, "Dumb a**" - replace your battery dummy".  He told me about the kick-out aspect and sure as heck, a new batter and the horse is galloping.

Smitty is happy again!

You might clean the ground to the engine from the battery that has caused a lot of problems too
