Could the seal be aging and letting water in?

The amount of oil in the rear end changed.

THAT's what I'm thinking.  But boy... we have been anal about filling the rear up the way you're supposed to.

This time... we filled it while on the side stand.  Allowing for an additional 1.5 oz or so.

???

Have read all the replies and opinions but cannot remember, I'm getting old, but how is your dust/ water/ whatever boot on the u-joint end? Could they not be sealed and allowed water to enter there? If so, there's not anywhere else for the moisture to go, is there?

I'm being nit picky, but the SM says lube should be added to the bottom of the filler hole and the bike should be in an upright position.  FWIW    ???

The manual cautions in the reassembly process that "Work carefully so as not to damage the drive shaft seal" pg.379 in the Clymers. Is it possible that this time it got damaged? Also, grease, whether water proof or molybdenum , would seem to me anyways, Wink to offer better protection against corrosion causing moisture.

I get it... I'm not being an ass here either... but I am pretty sure the manual says to use ONLY tires designed specifically for motorcycles too... but there sure are a lot of successful car tires mounted on Valks out there... just sayin'...

I am starting to buy the damaged grease seal possibility.

But I have personally SEEN the drive shaft come out WET.  No crap... dripping oil wet.  On MORE than one occasion. Wouldn't that oil wash the grease into your final drive?  Is THAT OK?

I wouldn't think it was a huge deal... but if Honda wanted moly lube in the final drive oil... wouldn't they TELL you to put some in there?

I dunno.

I'll post more eventually when I pull it again.

When I had my driveshaft out the other day I inspected the pinion cup end splines, then painted the splines with Honda Moly 60 paste.
Also changed the pumpkin oil with Royal Purple 75W90.

Is that enough?

I'm going to make a point of lubing the splines every year...those pics are ugly.

BTW, I measured out 150ml of hypoid...just went with that per one of the tech pages I have saved. Should stick with that or add more up to the edge of the hole when bike is level?

Geezz, how does something end up looking like that in 7K miles ?

4K miles, from new to this:

If the oil is not up to the edge of the fill hole,

I would suggest to add more to get it there.

It would probably only entail a few more drops

of oil, but regardless, that measure to me has

always been the defining level.
