My clutch releases very late.
Is there something that I can do to get it to release closer to the handle bar?

These monsters do that. The lever is almost all the way out before the clutch engages. So, my main question is. How long have you had this bike ? If its new to you, then its probably the way it should be. If something has changed, then thats different. Filing about .020-.025" off the pushrod helps a bit, it gives a little more free-play.

As was said, flush and bleed the clutch system.

I put adjustable clutch and brake levers on mine,  it make a big difference on the clutch grab point. I guess they are still available, I remember I had to grind an extra tab off of both to make them fit the Valkyrie.

When I put the non-adjustable wide levers(I forget what brand) on my 00 std. the clutch grabbed higher than with the stockers.I had to trim the push rod on the m/cyl. a little at a time til it felt normal. Also the warmer the clutch got the quicker it would disengage, just a little touch of lever and it would slip.

It's a hydraulic actuated clutch.

Trying to compare it to a cable operated

clutch is fruitless.

I've had two Interstates and the clutches both released with only a slight squeeze of the clutch lever.  I'm not sure why you'd want it any other way.

When there's air in the system, it will have the opposite effect. With air or low fluid, you'll have the handle pulled all the way in and the clutch will still be engaged-not a fun situation at a traffic light. It does create a "pucker factor".

Thank you all for your input.  I have speed bleeders and will be changing fluid.
I will be installing adjustable levers when I can find the right ones.  cooldude
