Me and my Valk at Freedom Rock

« on: May 15, 2013, 04:47:32 PM »

Got the bike in the local shop for some annual maintenance and stuff.
Good mech. right here in town.

99 tourer. Sonoma Red and Cream. Which is important as it is the fastest color. cooldude

Anyway, for the last few times I've run out of gas on the road and switched to the reserve line, it seems to take longer for the fuel to get to where it is supposed to be.

I usually have to go to reserve at about the 130 mile mark, give or take for speed and wind.
This last time I thought I wouldn't be able to get it going again.

Told my mech. about this and to have a look at the vacuum system for leaks. No de-smog on the bike. Au Natural.

He is currently working on the bike. Don't know if he's gotten to this issue yet.

My request from you all is to give me a clue as to what to suspect as a possible cause and when I go see my mech. I can give him a lead on what to look for and possibly replace.

So now you go how far before needing reserve?

At the tech sessions last year at I-12 Daniel Meyer suggested running in reserve AFTER a fill up for 50 or 60 miles than back to the on position to help keep the screen cleaned up on the STOCK fuel petcock. It could/might/maybe be as simple as a dirty fuel screen. Hope you find something out about your fuel problem. RIDE SAFE.

Good thought there. I'll pursue that one for sure.

That was the first sign of my petcock wearing out at the switch side.  I had already gone through the cover set deal, shortly after the delayed recovery thing that you have now, it started starving the fuel just like a kinked vent line.  Ride 5 miles pull over and let the bowls fill back up/repeat is no fun way to ride.

Get a real fuel valve is my recommendation

On Wednesday I went on reserve after 175 miles. I probably would have gotten further, but my wife filled the last tankfull. She is not as anal about filling the tank as I am.

I suspect you have a leaky vacuum diaphragm in the petcock. Easy enough to check, just apply a slight vac to the vac port on the petcock....it should not leak off at all. When you run the carbs dry in normal position, switching to reserve position will not fill the carbs back up quickly because the valve isn't fully open due to the vacuum leak.  When going up say a long grade, two up, does it feel sometimes like you run out of fuel.
