The idle will raise as the engine warms up, its normal. Cold start up should be in the 500 rpm range and it'll go up to around 900.  Make sure the throttle cables are working as they should and that there is a slight amount of free-play. Once the engine is warm, set the idle speed correctly [ grey plastic screw between cylinders 1 and 3].

The idle speed would go up when coming off of the hiway and sitting at the bottom of the ramp.
Check your vaccum hoses for leaks.  If you ake your tank off to change the filter it makes it a lot easier to change the hoses.
There are some short hoses on the intakes with plug in them replace those too.
Replacing those hoses stopped my problem.

Is this an ongoing problem or has it just suddenly appeared?

I had that problem with my Interstate. Turns out that the carbs were dirty. Cleaned them and the problem was solved.

That's a classic sign of a vacuum leak.

My 98 standard's idle will go up when it's hot outside  90's but only to 1200 . Usually start up is around 500 and then up to 900 when just warmed up. Did intake o-rings and hoses found one cracked. Pops alittle on decel , I think there is a vacuum leak I not finding but other than that it runs great. Ethanol gas Dosen't help .

wow thanks  for all the help guys  im humbled  it seems a lil turn on the idle screw  between #1 and # 3 seems to have corrected the prob,I will be replacing the air filter in the near future so i will take a clost look at those vaccum  lines and may just replace them if they look questionable again thanks  for all the input.
