My wife's cousin, Phillip and his wife Deborah, met us at our house to go to a fireworks display put on by the Army Corps of Engineers at the dam at Lake Eufaula. As we were pulling out the drive, I noticed my neighbor had their 8 house dogs out watering their tree, they notice us leaving and took off after Phillip, he had all kinds of fur around him but none on the tires. We had only gone about ten miles up a county road and had just crossed a bridge and was rounding the bend when there it was. A combine with a 20' head on it taking up both lanes plus some of the ditch on his side. A quick glance for Phillip, hard braking, switch to right side of the lane, another quick glance for Phillip, he was closing fast and hard on the brakes as well. Either of us could have reached about ten inches to the left and made contact. Major pucker factor. And the dude driving the combine never moved over. After that, the several vechicles that were drifting into our lane didn't even phase me. Until we were approaching a small residential area out in the boonies, and I'm thinking, 4th of July, family get togethers, and this is one of those spots in the road that would have lots of family, so I did slow about 10mph, and sure nuff, grandpa had backed into a neighbors yard then without looking pulled out right in from of us. Good thing intution was working. So, the rest of the ride was uneventful getting to our destination at the fireworks display. They always put on a great show. Met Poman from PC who knows Swoopie and says he's just got another bike. Waited for the crowds to disperse. About the last to leave. Got about one mile up the road and three vehicles were pulling to the side of the road and an approaching cop stops. They all get out pointing to one of their windshields as if someone had damaged it. Got back into Alabama, made my turn to head south at Shorterville, went about 1/2 mile south when zoooooommmmm booommmmm, a whislter bottle rocket whizzed about 10 feet from my head. More major pucker upper. Great ride, great scenary, great friends, great fireworks display, great adrenaline rushes, what more could you ask for. As for the subject line, there were a couple times I thought it would be a good idea to head back home. Not!!!
Not as long as there is gas in the tank and miles to ride.
