a/k/a Stuffy. '99 I/S Valk Roadsmith Trike

De Pere, WI (Green Bay)

« on: July 01, 2013, 08:51:19 AM »

It was this day last year I was lying in a hospital bed, unconscious, not expected to live. I didn't open my eyes for ten days and they were worried about brain damage(my wife maintains that's been the case as long as she's known me).  Cheesy It was Sunday, July 1st, at about 2:30am that I was struck down without warning with a major heart attack. Why I'm still here I don't know, and won't question it....just thankful. I was released five weeks later(Aug. 6.), and the struggle to rehabilitate myself began. In less than two months I was back on the bicycle, not going far but just getting my balance back. It all came with a rush, both of skill and strength. Then about Oct. 10, much to my wife's dismay I took the motorcycle around the block, a distance of two miles. It felt as natural as walking and I had tears in my eyes when I pulled into the driveway. I haven't looked back since. By November 1, I was back in the gym, weak as a kitten but determined. I set a goal for my 75th b'day on April 2. I wanted to be at, or beyond, the level of strength I had the afternoon prior to my attack and I reached that goal nearly two weeks prior to my birthday. That was the best present I could give myself....and Rita, my sweet wife. God is still in the miracle business.

As a result of my rehab effort, I do pretty much whatever I want. Along with taking care of my wife, I play golf a couple times a week, go to the gym 2-3 times a week, ride the Valk when it's not too hot, and still take the bicycle for a spin a couple times a week as well. Basically the same life I was leading before all this happened. Life is still wonderful.  cooldude

Second chances at life make you change the way you do business! Life is good even in these times when something like that happens. Other trivial things just don't matter anymore!  cooldude

Good on ya John!! May the good health continue for you. I had 3 bypasses in '92 and a stent in '08. By the grace of God I am still here and pretty healthy. Congratulations on your recovery and well being.

Time does fly.  I remember when it happened.  I don't know you yet, except for here... always enjoy your posts and we were all deeply concerned last year.  Our prayers helped I'm sure.  God didn't need you up there yet...

Same but a few days ago for our boss at work.  He's fit as a fiddle and can walk quicker and probably longer than I can at age 64.  He had a heart attack at work much to our surprise a tad over 1 year ago.  He came in a few days ago and mentioned it was one year ago today he had to be med flighted to hospital.

I just said, 'happy anniversay' - we all had a good chuckle over that one.   cooldude Grin

Firmly believe 'attitude' plays a huge role on recovery and once you loose that positive attitude is when things decline.  Keep up the good work!  cooldude
