New Valkyrie owner here with a question or two. I see the owners manual recommends changing the timing belts at 100,000 miles but I'm concerned of the age of my Valkyrie, it's a 98 model so I'm thinking I should change the belts due to the age(but only 24,000 miles). I've changed the belts on several GL1000s and know that they are interference engines. Are the Valkyries interference also? Research shows a Gates t275 as fitting the engine, can anyone confirm? Thoughts about the Gates belts? thanks, mw

I did my 98 at 50k,and since it's easy and cheap(use the napa/gates belt)I plan to do every 50 just for peace of mind.

I think the manual says to inspect the belts at 100k.

Have used Napa belts on 1500 Goldwing and my Valk. I love them and a whole lot cheaper than OEM. cooldude

I replaced the originals with Gates belts on my '98 Tourer with 79K miles.  The belts coming off looked perfectly fine.  Gates makes the Honda and Napa belts.

Yes the Valkyrie uses an interference engine. Inspect belts at 100000 miles. That being said I replaced the belts on my 99 I/S last year or so. As inexpensive as new belts are and if it makes you feel better as it did me go fer it.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I checked the belts on mine at 100K, replaced at like 198K, and currently setting on 243K.

Here is a link to generic parts for the Valk.    Store the link away someplace or put it in your favorites for future reference.

Congratulations R J for hitting 243K. It's been setting on 242K for years (since I can remember). Good to see you moving again. cooldude

Son and daughter are adding on the miles.    I'm trying to ride the Chevy, when we aren't working on it.

It tried to get lazy so we bumped up another step in a cam.    It woke him up a little bit.

Pissed my new neighbor off, he has a Dodge Ram Hemi and thinks it is fast.   We lined up on an abandoned mile of highway, and took off.   While he was spinning I was hauling ass down the mile run.    I got there and turned around before he did.   He ain't talking to me no more, as if I give a hoot.    I told him he was a sexual intellect.

Here is a link to my experience. I've got about 3,000 miles on my Valk since doing the belts and the mod. I believe I had under $70 in parts and materials.

Check amazon.com for the belts. After I replaced mine with the NAPA belts I saw the gates there cheaper with free shipping. Although this was 2 years ago. Good luck.

Here are the parts I used along with a trip to Fastenal for the adaptation of the pulleys to the stock mounting plates of the original tensioner pulleys.

The Honda bible says to set the belts at .2-.3". I think they make too much noise at that setting. I leave a bit looser, 3/8" and they are quieter.

A timing looks perfect, right to the second it decides to break. I have not heard of one ever breaking on one of these though. I think thats a good thing. Oh, yes, these are interference engines.

I do have a whine in my engine, seems to be from the front, so I'll order belts and the Gates tensioner pulleys that jimmylee recommended. Also try the looser belt. thanks to all, mw

I probably should have mentioned this before. Since this an interference engine, you know the belts can't be off a tooth. Just be careful, some have not been and have 'warped' some valves.

I've gotten an 88' Goldwing with only 60K miles. No new belt change. I've already bought the replacement belts and intend to change them out by the end of summer.

Only for my peace of mind.
