Started getting an intermittent clicking sound coming from what appears to be the left side of the rear wheel. This may not happen for a hundred miles or so then starts and last for maybe fifty miles or more then quits. This is repeated several times on a long trip. Before doing the Iron Butt Saddle Sore ride I replaced the u joint, both rear bearings, the rubbers in the rear wheel, drive shaft assembly, and rear brake pads. Bike has about three thousand miles on these parts..............Any ideas? Before I tear it down again...

Yup, sounds like either a bad rear bearing or possibly the long center spacer. If that center spacer is jammed up against the inside of the bearings and isn't centered, it will click but won't do it all the time. Had that trouble with a bike I put together for a friend, ended up pulling the rear wheel again. Tried just loosening everything(final drive and axle) and retightening them in proper order. Made a difference but didn't get rid of the noise. Finally removed a bearing, ground a fractional amount off the end of the center spacer and reinstalled. Clicking gone, and he has since put a ton of miles on it.
Wayne, you should consider doing the bearing mod on the left side while you're at it....assuming you haven't already done so. Some riders that have had regular left side bearings go out have done it and ended their annual replacment of that bearing. If you need a cut down spacer just contact Bill Gurney(Grumpy), he'll fix you up with one in short order.

Thanks for the response. Both rear bearings are new, just replaced less than four thousand miles ago. I understand a new bearing can go bad, but had this same sound before installing this set. I rode the bike all the ay from N.C. with it doing this, so I'm thinking it could be the spacer John mentioned...John, not familiar with the rear bearing mod you mentioned...Is the spacer your talking about the outside spacer?........How much did you take off the inside spacer?..........May do both....

Wayne, as for how much I took off the long center spacer....probably no more than the thickness of a business card. You might try loosening up the axle and the four nuts on the final drive. Move it around a bit, including spinning the axle with an allen wrench, then retorque the axle followed by the four nuts. Might do the trick, might not, but it's a quick test without having to pull the rear wheel again. There is always the possibility the bearing boss may be messed up. Out of round slightly letting the bearing move in its seat. As for the left rear bearing mod, below is the Shop Talk link. It involves cutting down the small left side spacer and not using a dust seal...no room for it with the larger bearing and the bearing is sealed anyway. Keep us posted on what happens. http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/5204_bearing_mod.pdf

A friend of mine had the same sound. We thought it was the bearing too. When I went to change it I happened to look very closely inside the bearing seat and was able to see that the bottom of the seat was wallowed out and no bearing could sit square in there, the clicking sound was from the bearing actually moving around inside there

Thanks for all the feedback, I know this wheel has had five left bearings replaced in the past, so I'm believing what John and Chris said about the bearing cavity/surface....I've ordered another double row bearing and asked Bill to send me a spacer for the mod. I'm changing to a new wheel and going with the bearing mod.... Need to ride... ....Not repair all the time...

Update: The wheel bearing itself was not bad but the hub pocket where it sits was showing wear. Bearing looked as if it may have turned inside the hub on occasions. The middle spacer or distance bar as Honda calls it had some "chatter" marks on both ends but I really can't say that was the problem because I simply don't know. My opinion is the side torque of riding in the Blue Ridge caused the bearing to break loose and spin inside the already bad hub...It id not do this before I went up there. I replaced the wheel and went with the double row of bearings on the left side as John suggested. Bill was kind enough to send me the needed spacer and the unit is back together. The new wheel and the bearing mod gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling...Think all is good!

I had the same symptoms (after 3 bearings) and also replaced my wheel. Where did you find your wheel, E-Bay?
