I am thinking about stripping the fairing and pods off the 'state.  I just like the standard better.  Wife likes the IS.  So I have been debating the merits of buying another Standard and adding an IS trunk, but thought... why not keep my IS and take the fairing and pods off.  OK... I'll have to buy a headlight, speedo and tach... and new crash bars... and radiator ends... but I would then know what I had...

I have been thinking about paining the IS anyway... and I figure, if I tear it apart to paint it... I just wouldn't put it back together.

Here's the question...

can I just tuck all the wiring harness "stuff" left unplugged from the fairing away somewhere that it could be restored someday?  Will the IS run without some little doo-dad in the fairing?

Just thinking out loud at this point...

How about trying the IS trunk on the standard first, to see if that's the part  she likes? Maybe a supervalk is what you need. You would need to add heavier shocks to the standard, to get the ride. Instead of stripping the Interstate, Just sell. Pick up one of the nice standards available, and use the extra cash to add to the new standard.JMO cooldude

Sounds like a lot of work and $. New wiring harness, etc. Just slap a trunk on the standard. Be cheaper.

Since you are "just thinking out loud at this point," I will also ignore your question and ask what does Mrs. Jabba like about the Interstate that is missing from the Standard?

My initial thought is the same as the previous responses--I would think it would be more cost effective to add to a Standard than subtract from an Interstate.

And sorry, I have absolutely no idea regarding your actual question.

Keep the 'state and get yourself a std, and make it solo.

Everyone needs two.

Everyone needs two.

I already HAVE a solo standard.  And like it SOOO much better than the 'state.  But the Ol'Lady likes the 'state seating and backrest.  I like to be able to get rid of the fairing.  I think the standard with a Honda shield and Baker's does a BETTER job of protecting you, AND has the option of opening the Bakers up.  The last two years we have traveled in the summer heat and it has been miserable... I'd like a little more wind.

Sounds like a lot of work and $. New wiring harness, etc. Just slap a trunk on the standard. Be cheaper.

Do I really need a different wiring harness for the standard?  I know you do going from a standard to an IS, but I would be abandoning the extra crap... and thus thought that a big rewire project may not be necessary.

I got dibs on the pods and fairing cooldude

If this happens, I will keep all the extra parts to be able to go back... should I ever end up selling it.

Buying another STD and adding a trunk is an option too.  I was thinking about Mario's Blue/White Std.  But it's been sold finally and now is no longer an option.  I don't h ave the kitchen pass on all this yet either.  The 'State is my wife's bike.  She's in charge of it.  I will defer to her wants on the deal.  But I hope to influence her to my way of thinking.  Evil  After all... she wants ME to be happy too, right?

if u remove the pods, u have to replace the radiator shield also, otherwise the wings of the shield will stick out.

IMO, sell the I/S and get another std/tourer and mod it to fit both of your needs.

Just put a shorty shield on the 'state, for the Summer.

Course that means the wife gets a blast of air, sitting up taller on the rear.  So she uses a fullface or 3/4 with full visor.  Maybe pull the fork and fairing wings.

Welllll...

To Standard-ize your I/S your gonna need the following at least....

Headlight and assorted mounting stuff $100? $200?

Front turn signals? I/S mount to fairing, so you'd at least have to get the mounts $50-100

Standard crash bars- new $250-300+...used??? hard to find

End caps for Radiator $50-$100

New air guide- $50 ish new, used....$$10-20?????

A new windscreen, mounting hardware etc $300-500....

Bakers- I saw you said about adjusting them and the I/S Bakers (if you have them) wont work on a Standard- $150-200????

Lastly, if you do not change out the Wiring harness, you are going to have to alter the current, because all the plugs are different....And you have alot of extra wire that you would have to cut/hide someplace
Plus you lose the radio as the controls are built into the dash...  I think it would be quite the mess to figure out what wire goes where to use the standard headlight and gauges...if they would even work...

And there is a good amount of extra wires up in that fairing and a big ol' plug that goes i the dash gauges....... and fiddlin' around with 10-12 year old wires is always a treat

Plus I think the handlebar controls are different and the chrome covers for a Standard wont work on I/S

So my top of the head Cost Calculator says you'd have to lay out over $1000 just for parts.....

And alot of time..... not to mention to put it back would be a minor nightmare...

Put the stock seat back on the I/S (I think you have ultimate or aftermarket on I/S as I've seen you post on them)... sell it WITHOUT the trunk( keep it-the trunk can be $1000 or more on average)... buy a Tourer with the proceeds and should have lil' extra$$$.... Mount trunk and seat from IS.. paint to match..... now you have what you want and if you work it right, a Lil extra moola for some bling.....

Just a LOOOONG thought... dammit I type too fast.....

I know... But I have the turn signal mounts... I bought a set YEARS ago when I was doing driving lights, and didn't use them.  Crash bars are cheap.  $40 each.  Squealy has bought a set before.  I have a Hondaline windshield and Bakers already.  I'd take all the extra BS off the handlebars with the fairing... and store it.

I even thought about just mad-Maxing the headlights on.  I don't really NEED a tach... and I could use my GPS for a speedo...

I thought selling the IS without the trunk would be hard to do...  ???

I think the right thing to do is buy a tourer and add the trunk... but I still need the kitchen pass for that.  If I kept the 'state I already have, I at least know what I have... I have put 18K on it... and KNOW it's in good shape, and well maintained.

We'll see what the boss says.

What about a wider backrest pad on the standard? My mustang is about a foot wide.

Hey, heres a thought.....

Just get a set of Interstate bag rails and Trunk for your Standard... Seat optional if you are using the regular or the aftermarket from your I/S .. it should work on standard.

Set it up with the Quick release/Supervalk trunk mod and then you can drop a trunk on your standard.... If its set up right you can add/remove the trunk in a few minutes and an I/S style seat will fit a standard.. just wont lock in the back... but it works...Then your can put it back to solo the rest of the time... thats the way my I/S is 98% of the time anyway, My trunk hangs on the wall tll I want it

If you sell the I/S you have plenty of cash to get trunk and rails and have it painted to match your standard.. could even get a I/S tank for the standard/Tourer for the extra fuel.... you already have the saddle bags right?

Or even cheaper if you want to keep the 'State.... do the mod and have I/S rails on both... then you can move the same trunk from each ... sure the paint wont match.... but you can't see it when your riding....

But if you can get the same functionality and comfort on your standard...why keep the I/S?

Give you room for some other toy... like a Valk Bobber .... Evil

Brad

I like having two... so if I am having an issue with one of 'em, I got a back up.

But... I LIKE the way you think about the bobber...

I am starting to get a little selfish about the Blue/Pearl STD.  I have it all solo... and that's how I want it.  I like having MINE, and I like my wife having hers.  I know it's weird... but I feel NO urge to add a trunk to MY standard.   Roll Eyes

I make no defense about the logic, or lack thereof in the feeling.  But it IS a feeling and I do HAVE it.
