Veterans across all ages share the bond of service to our nation, whether for a short couple years, or a lifetime.  Some were drafted, many were/are volunteers, all gave some, some gave all.

I've run into several fellow veterans on this forum and was curious enough to post this simple poll.  Regardless of time or branch, we all share at least this one thing in common: service.

(Services are listed in order of creation)

This is meant as a simple poll regarding the uniformed service veterans on the forum.  While also curious about other professions such as firefighters, EMS, and police, etc. (and extremely value their contributions they offer to the public), my life has had little involvement with them and so I will leave that poll to one who represents one of those professions.

You might have included a last category as no service, just as a control/comparison.

That's an idea...

I thought of including non-uniformed service, GS employees and such.  I've worked with civilians who have served the government for more than 30 years!  Then there are some of the other professions I originally mentioned.

As you say, the "no service" category would provide an overall percentage, veterans to non-veterans.

I spent 6 years with the Ky Army National Guard. Never called up for active duty during my time like so many units since Desert Storm and 9-11. The government doesn't consider me a veteran so neither do I.

USAF - 1972-76 !  I've often wondered the past 40 years how my life would have turned out had I stayed in ! There wasn't a chance of that happening though !
That first night at Lackland being 17 and out of high school for 3 weeks - I vividly remember laying in that rack thinking ' oh crap '. What have I done now ?  That being said - I'm a true patriot in the biggest sense !  I live in an area where there's more military than civilians and I thank God our country supports them the way they do today which wasn't the case when I was in !  Guess like they have said ' the war at home was worse ' is true !

Forgot to add my wife spent 35 years supporting the troops as a DA Civilian.  She called them her troops, and was loved by all she had dealings with.

20 years in the Air Force (B-52D's then B-1B's), then 5 years supporting the B-1B as a contractor. Stayed with the same company but changed customers and have supported the flight operations of U.S. Customs (Customs and Border Protection now days) for the past 13 years.

Now it's time to stir up some trouble... Fighters are fun; bombers set policy. Evil

Looking back(notice I do that a LOT as I get older)I shoulda stayed in and put my 30 in.  Undecided I had it made in da shade-had em by da ass-had good duty-except-I had that tail hook in my resume. That would have meant 2 years shore station then 2 more years at sea. The upside was I could have made E-9 in the minimum time for making E-9 as my speciality was wide open at the time. RIDE SAFE.

I like your spirit Sandman.    cooldude

I didn't join until 31; as old as you could be without some special skill/offer.  I had to finished my education/license at my own expense first.  The Navy gave me a bum interview with a female supply Lt., the Marines said if you can pass our pre-PT test (for Quantico OCS) we want you, the Air force took me and I didn't have to pass a PT to get in (or any basic training) (they did require a photograph).  2funny

There were many more important considerations than PT for my USAF choice... I'm sure I could have passed the tests.

When I told the Marine recruiter I was in OK shape (for 31 competing with 22's for a couple months at Quantico), but not top shape, he offered to send a Sgt. to my house to run me up and down the roads, pullups, situps, and other excitement to get me ready.  I liked his spirit too.

US Army ASA. 67-71 Spent 31 months incountry (VN) with a SOG sigint group that were assigned to all military sectors incountry gathering intel on NVA activity reporting back to DIRNSA & MACV. One of the first Americans KIA in VN was ASA.
After the American draw down our compound was used to house the NVA/VC delegation in 1973 during the Paris Peace talks. Kind of a shock watching NVA strolling around our hootches.
