On the operating table till next spring.

After I have her diagnosed, (Honda says tranny) I was going to decide what to do with her from there. Then I got to thinking and you'll find my thoughts in these two threads. Please take the time to read them in order.

I still say replace the engine and keep her rollin'. An easy and thrifty solution for well under $1k.

My thought is to get this bike back to it's original owner.

If he wants it, and y'all can make a deal, that would be awesome. Perhaps you'll
find it is just some $200 driveshaft thing, or final drive swap-out.

He's kind of a legend around here, and you've observed why  cooldude

Did they pull it down to diagnose as "tranny"?

If the pinion cup goes...it sounds like the tranny has exploded....

T-Man,
If Bruce is good with getting the bike back, and you plan on fixing it yourself, please let us know what it will take as far as parts or money to accomplish this task. I for one would like to see DDT put her over the 500K mark. Put me down for helping anyway I can... just let me know

T-man...when you asked in your "thread", "What would you do?", I thought to myself exactly as you did. But it takes a big heart to actually want to do that.

My honest take is, even though you have every right to do as you please, the "heart" of that bike does belong to it's original owner. His being a little financially strapped and in a bind makes it all the more commendable that you are trying to accomplish your goal.

God Bless you!!   cooldude

Wow.  T-Man, there are no words to properly describe what a wonderful thing you are considering.  You are why the VRCC is unique in relation to other clubs - members care about each other and the motorcycles that have adopted them.

Ali probably misses DDT as much as he misses her.

I'd like to see them reunited.

Thanks for such an uplifting topic.

While I applaud this effort, and really REALLY hope it pans out, and I do agree that the VRCC is special, reading the links from the Volusia board shows me there are some mighty fine folks over at that group too...

Before we go too far in efforts to place Ali back in DDT's possession, we may want to find out how he feels about it.  He may have been at a point of being finished with that bike.

If he truly wants to keep the Valkyrie I will join in the effort to restore it to him (without financially impacting the rider who purchased it from him), but I need him to honestly say that's what he wants.

Wouldn't it be awful if I traded in my hundreds of thousand mile Mazda pickup on a new ride only to have my well thinking friends bring the rattletrap back to my driveway?

What a Debbie Downer.

- Ali's not a rattletrap Mazda pickup. She still looks good.
- There are lots of Mazda pickups with oodles of miles on them, but how many have 441K on them?
- how many motorcycles have that many miles?

DDT is reading all this.  He'll chime in.

Just my 2 cent's.
I would fixx what need to be fixxed and ride her. This is the one of highest milage bike out there should not be parted out. Trans parts are cheap just check ebay that stuff never sell's. I would not go overboard, split the trans case from the eng and fix what is need's.

Also I would do my own T/S. Steeler have missed the problem before us to sell a bike. As it is running fine.
1. I would put bike on stand, rear wheel off ground and see if you can spin the motor with the rear wheel (may need to pull plugs). If you can likely clutch bad.  If you cant
2 I would remove rear tire and check splines all the way to the output of transmission. If all good start and make sure no output out of trans with eng running.
3 If no output pull motor/tran assy and split trans from motor and see what is wrong.

This is most likely not possible or practical, but when Ali's days are done, she should reside in a prominent place in the VRCC museum.

I will say that it is totally up to DDT, on whether he would like to have her back,  he just does not look right on the bike he purchased to get back home. Like I said it will be his call, sure would like to ride with him again sitting tall in the saddle on his beloved "ALI". Keep us updated, if it works out and she will be coming back to Alabama and DDT, count me in.

WOW!!!

Now I can truly appreciate how ScooterTrash felt that evening on Cheaha Mountain when Strider presented him with a new scooter!!! I hate to admit it, being a male in our culture, but a couple of tears welled up in my eyes when I read this thread and links... Man, words just aren't adequate at a time like this...

First, let me say something about Terry (t-man403). I liked him right off when he came over to eyeball ALI. A very nice guy. When I rode off and left ALI with him, I knew she was in good hands... with a stand-up guy who would appreciate her and treat her with respect. I'm now more certain of that than ever...

Second, having ALI back would be a dream come true for me. As I tried to express in other posts, my bond with and affection for ALI is far more than a causal ownership relationship. Carl is insightful, thoughtful and penetrating as always with his remarks, and it is a very legitimate question to raise... The answer is an emphatic, unequivocal, unambiguous 'YES!' as to whether I would want her back!!! On the other hand...

I made a deal with a good person, the real deal in terms of integrity and trustworthiness, so I would not, no matter how tempted, try to renig or back out of our deal. I made a commitment, as did he, and I will honor it. That said, if all I've read is as it appears, then I'd be over joyed to make a new deal, as outlined in his threads... Yes, there would be a first class airfare ticket waiting in Wetumpka when he arrived, a warm bed to sleep in, and a sincere offer to lead him on a bike tour anywhere he'd like to go: Alabama, the Smoky Mountains, just name it... he could ride CALI for obvious reasons...

I've had a couple of phone calls with offers of assistance in restoring ALI to riding form... Allan, Punisher, for example offered to replace the engine and tranny for free... just pay shipping to his house, then come pick her up when he's finished... Dang! How cool is that? I never mentioned this to Terry, however, because... he made a good bargain, in my estimation, and I gave my word.

It touches me deeply to see the reactions and responses to this - what up until now has been a most disappointing, even distressing, episode in my life. I'm overwhelmed with all that's been said... by Terry and all of you! I never thought about being on the receiving end of our famous 'generosity'... I know how it feels to be on the giving side of the equation, but this is incredible!!! Thanks, my dear friends, you've made much more than my day just by giving me the lift reading all of this has provided... I'd like nothing more than to have ALI reappear in my driveway, to rejoin her on the big adventure of life... WOW! I have no memory of ever feeling this good before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DDT,
i was once on the other end of a situation like this, even got a write up in GWRRA mag.
so let me say this, it feels just as good to the folks that make something like this happen as it does to the folks on the receiving end...we purchased a bike for a guy who sold his to pay his wifes hospital bill,, when we gave him his brand new used bike there wasnt a dry eye in the house....

t-man403, did you get my PM?

Sorry for the delay as I am camping in the evenings and I have no signal out there. I come in during the day to do my jobs. Hard to get a real break sometimes.

I did get your PM and I appreciate your offer to help out so I will be in touch. Thank you!
I have another offer as well from a friend off the "Volusia" site. So as far as know how, we're set!  Smiley

I'm typing on my Blackberry so I will post again later when at a computer.
