Roll Eyes Roll Eyes  wheres  ali  ???  just asking t man

She's in hibernation.

"DDT" and I have discussed a few options for her return and all of them are for next spring \ summer. I know it would have been kinda nice to try for the " Fall Color" rally you guys have this month, but for me it just is not possible. Right now it's 39F out and raining and it's supposed to drop over night to 30F with a bit of snow possible. Nothing that will stay of course but the weather can be unpredictable here due to living so close to the mountains.

Also, I am an "HVAC" guy and this is a very busy time of the year for me.

I have found a place to store my "Gurl" over the winter so that I have more space in my garage to mess with "ALI". I'll probably take her over there after a final ride this weekend as it is looking like it will be in the 50F range and it is a long weekend due to it being our "Thanks Giving". Once she's tucked in I'll get busy and clean up my garage a bit and then get "ALI" put back together after I do a bit of detailing.

So that's my story for now, but I'll probably be posting to get some advice on some things as it goes along.

You should replace the u-joint and boot IMO just for peace of mind if nothing else.

It's been a while since I have updated you guy's so here it is!

I was at Honda today as they are in need of a little HVAC work, so I went to have a look at the job.

While I was there I remembered "Smokinjoe's" suggestion or at least part there of and I ordered a u-joint and I will have that in my hands tomorrow............courtesy of Honda once again!!!  cooldude

Being the smart guy I am I forgot to order the boot.  uglystupid2  Wonder what my chances are of getting it added to the good deeds of Honda .......... guess I'll find out tomorrow..........

I wanted to keep some things a secret from "DDT" so that when he sees "ALI" this summer it would be a real surprise for him. I even talked to "Oss" to find  out who are "DDT'S" close friends as I was going to get their opinions as to whether I should keep certian things a secret or not. Without making contact with his friends ................ I've decided not to hold back what I've been doing as there are way too many other people on both the "VRCC" and the "VR" that the progress of "ALI" needs to be shared with.

So .................. what's my big secret?    coolsmiley

Well, it has always been my intent to get this bike looking like not such a high miler for her return to "DDT". So I'm looking at these ........
........and I'm thinking ............ how come "DDT" gets a new seat and "Napper" is on the old vinyl?!  ???
Not only that, "ALI" deserves a whole new outfit as well!!

So, I was going to take the old goods to a friend of mine that just happens to be an upholsterer and see what kinda magic he could pull off. Then I got to thinking .............. so off and email went to "Ultimate Seats", a sponsor of the "VRCC". I sent them the link from here as to what was going on with "ALI" and (no names mentioned) "Ultimate" got back to me and asked "what they could do to help out".
I sent them some close up shots of the seats and they agreed that the new front seat was really out shining the other three pieces. They said the pillion was going to be a problem to fix as the cover is glued to the foam and the foam to the deck. The foam would be damaged trying to get the cover off of it. I'm thinking the hot Alabama sun would have taken it's toll out of the glue so I'm going to take a chance at removing the cover anyway even if I have to buy a new seat. Amazingly enough, that glue was still good and if I pulled on the cover the foam was going to tear. What the hay ........ out comes the heat gun and ta da!! I sent this picture to "Ultimate seats" and .........

.........about two weeks later this showed up in the mail courtesy of "Ultimate Seats"!!  cooldude

How cool is this?!!  Cool

My upholstery buddy has volunteered his services to make sure the new covers are installed properly.

A BIG BIG thank you to "Ultimate Seats" for they're help in this adventure.  cooldude

Well, there was some AHA swirling around in my ol' noggin', fer sure, but mostly there was lots of WOW!!! This is an amazing story for sure... and a real testimony to the goodness in many folks, particularly those who inhabit this 'electronic club house'. I'm truly grateful to be part of this community!

There is a rather long, multi-part story to the differences in the seat parts on ALI... I'll share that another time, however. For now, let me just point out the obvious... When my baby broke and I left her in Canada, some wondered if I'd just left her on the side of the road or placed her on a scrape heap or otherwise disposed of her in some ignoble fashion... I'm sure by now all know that a great guy took her in...

I keep thinking about that old saying, 'Behind every cloud is a silver lining..." I'm not sure that is absolutely correct in all cases, but it's certainly turning out to be so here... I felt really down when things took a nasty turn last summer, but I accepted that her time had probably come. Happily, it appears I was quite wrong on that score! WOW! Simply WOW!!!

Again, it's been a while but here's what happened today finally!

Got my butt out to the garage today and got busy on the u-joint and boot seal.

Drive splines look fine. I cleaned them up from what you see here and applied new grease.

The old u-joint appeared okay at both ends but I guess it's best not to take a chance.

Old on the right, new on the left. Well where else would the new one be?  Cheesy

Before .....

After .....

Finished!!

Was an easy job to do. Took longer for me to get the boot seated on the swing arm than it did to do the rest!  tickedoff

Time to go play hockey .......... later!

THIS IS AN AWSOME STORY!!! Have a 99 Standard (V1) and 2000 Tourer (V2). 20 and 36k miles (babies). this gives this Okie some incentive to check some stuff.
Yesterday was out in the back yard in 40 degree temps putting on a signal minder on V2. Nothing I have done even compares to this.

GOD bless you guys! cooldude

I apologize if I missed it, there's a lot here, but did ya' 100% figure out, and fix, what the original problem was at this point? Just curious what it was. I know we had some strong remote diagnostic opinions, but wondering if she's been fixed yet?

Thanks, and sorry again if I just skimmed right over that already being said, still blown away by what you're doing!

You know, its not that hard to do.

I'll be doing my bike next............after it is all said and done with "ALI".
I'm no pro but I'd say every three years, it would be a good thing to pull the drive shaft out and take a look. Of course, while your in there, it makes it easy to clean up the bike a bit. I'd say the hardest thing to do is to do it during riding season, unless you know it's going to be raining a while because in reality, this can easily be done on a weekend.

"Serk", it's not put back together as of yet to do any testing.

Maybe you missed the pictures of the drive shaft and pinion cup but when you see them, I think it's a pretty safe bet that they were the problem.

Front wheel before ..............

After .............

Picked it up today!

Honda Powerhouse referred me to "Alberta Wheel Repair". There is a guy named Paul working there that I talked to over the phone and got a quote from. I took the rear wheel up first and told him the story of "Ali". When I went to pick up the rear wheel, he said,"let's leave the invoice open till you bring the front wheel in and when we're done that one, we will settle then".  ???  Pretty trusting guy!
Anyway, due to the story behind "Ali", they gave me a nice discount off the quoted price for which I thanked them!!

My problem now is this ................ these wheels look better than mine, that's just not right!!! Do you think "DDT" will notice if I put my wheels on "Ali" and put these on mine?!  2funny

I can tell you where I'm taking my wheels when I get home from InZane!  cooldude

Those wheels look mucho better than the CHROME ones I had on MGM.

I got them through LaMont out of Direct Line mucho many years ago.

The rear wheel, chrome one, weighted a hell of a lot more than the stock ones.

The EOM wheel, I could set down with my legs under the frame and lift the wheel into place.

When I put the Chrome ones on, I had to have assistance to get it up there.

It's a good thing ALI and I have such a strong spiritual connection and bond... I might not recognize her by sight otherwise! T-man, you're going way above and beyond here... Just know that I'm one grateful and astounded dude!!! All of this is cause for some mixed feelings, though...

I miss my baby terribly... Knowing she'll be returning is wonderful... knowing I'll have to wait is... well... you know... I've toyed with the idea of just flying up to Calgary and doing the reunion there, thereby, lessening the wait... I haven't mentioned that before because so many others have been involved in this story too, and it wouldn't be fair to them for me to do a selfish thing like that... I do feel like a child a month before Christmas, though!!!

She and I averaged 45K miles per year... for over eight years! A couple of those years we actually traveled more than 50K. We were together a lot... In fact, for four of those years I had no other means of transportation... just her. I love that bike... She and I traveled far indeed... not just in terms of time and distance but in ways only a few could understand...

To say it pains me to not have her around would be an incredible understatement. I do take comfort in having CALI to partially fill the void, though, and that has been an enormous help... I'll be glad, however, to be reunited with my 'soul mate'... I'm thinking she and I just may need to do a serious road trip when we do reconnect...

Please excuse the ramblings... Terry, you have been elevated in my eyes to 'hero' status... Destiny sure smiled kindly upon ALI and me when it led you to us that fateful day last August... DAYUM!!!

I'm going to take one for the team here... I'll wait for that first kiss with ALI until my hero arrives with her at InZane... could be Sunday evening at the Early Bird Special thingy... not sure when he will drive up. Anyway, as tempting as it might be to jump the gun, I'm going to do my best to endure this separation until then.

I used to be rather diligent about bike cleaning and such... earlier on in my riding career. Once I became a distance rider, however, and rode nearly every day... Well, I came to a point where it was easier to justify skipping a day... then a week... then... I decided to rethink that whole thing in time. Nowadays I think of mud, dust, dirt, bugs, road grim, and critter blood as akin to campaign ribbons on a soldier's chest... symbols of distinction!

A guy asked me once upon a time why I would let it be in that condition... I responded, "Do you have any idea what it takes to get one to look like that?" Besides, I find it good for memory jogging whenever I look at the 'bug collection' on her windshield...

Well, I came to a point where it was easier to justify skipping a day... then a week... then... I decided to rethink that whole thing in time. Nowadays I think of mud, dust, dirt, bugs, road grim, and critter blood as akin to campaign ribbons on a shoulder's chest... symbols of distinction!

A guy asked me once upon a time why I would let it be in that condition... I responded, "Do you have any idea what it takes to get one to look like that?" Besides, I find it good for memory jogging whenever I look at the 'bug collection' on her windshield...
