1. (Oss) Doing the nut cage mod for the battleax 200, did you:
Just take the cage?
Go all out and get a SS carriage bolt?

2. (anyone) Just to satisfy my customizing redneckery..

Is there any reason why one could not hone the square nut a bit thinner? Will likely replace

However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

I cut the cage off, smoothed everything down, dabbed a little paint, and put it back the same way but with a skinny nut.  Probably could have used the fat nut, but didn't...

I cut the cage off and kept the square nut but it still rubbed my CT. Substituted a carriage bolt: done.
I suppose you could cut down the square nut but it's probably a lot easier to buy a jam nut which are thinner versions of hex nuts. If you have or will have a trailer hitch I'd rather have more threads engaged than will result from a jam nut or shaved square nut.

I did mine ages ago. It's been so long that I had to check.

You can see it here if you wish.

I actually did grind my square nut thinner when I did my standard in 07, and have had no problems..but technically not a good idea as thread engagement should be the same as the diameter of the bolt to ensure proper strength..just did my IS this summer and used a button head bolt.
