3 Dead After Motorcycle Ride

AP-Authorities say three people have died after an accident during a charity motorcycle ride southeast of Dallas.
A Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman who refused to give her name confirmed the deaths but said she had no other details on Saturday morning's accident.  Witnesses tell the Corsicana Daily Sun that several motorcyclists were struck by a pickup truck that had lost control and rolled into a group of riders. The newspaper reported that at least two people were taken by helicopter from the scene on FM 709 in Navarro County. The motorcyclists had left Corsicana High School for a 50-mile charity ride. Corsicana is about 55 miles from Dallas.

Pickup kills 3 at Corsicana High School motorcycle fundraiser

A Corsicana High School teacher and her father were among three people killed in Navarro County on Saturday morning after a pickup swerved head-on into a group of motorcyclists on a ride benefiting the school's dance team. Three others were injured.

Teacher Leslie Tahamia McCluney, 34, her father, Terry Paul Nelson, 61, and real estate agent David Edmond Coley, 54, all of Corsicana, died at the scene.

"Leslie was a very good science teacher," Corsicana schools Superintendent Don Denbow said in Saturday's online edition of the Corsicana Daily Sun. "She was one of those special people who could connect with her students and get the most out of them."

A Department of Public Safety spokesman said 54-year-old William Jack Lindsey Jr. was driving a 1993 Ford pickup east on FM709 outside Corsicana when he entered the westbound lanes and collided head-on with the Harley-Davidson motorcycles driven by Coley and Nelson. McCluney was a passenger on Nelson's motorcycle. It was unclear what caused Lindsey to swerve into the motorcyclists.

Lindsey's truck overturned after the initial collisions, authorities said. Motorcyclist Robert Gonzales, 54, of Waco swerved and avoided a collision with the truck. Leslie Casey, 54, of Waco also swerved but struck the overturned pickup.

Lindsey was treated and released from Parkland Memorial Hospital on Saturday. Authorities said Saturday that Gonzales was listed in fair condition at Parkland and Casey was listed in fair condition at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

The DPS spokesman said that more than 30 motorcycles were making a 90-mile charity run when the accident occurred about 9:25 a.m.

Former Corsicana Police Chief G.M. Cox was among the riders in Saturday's event. He said he was about "a minute or so" behind the group of cyclists who were struck.

"I don't think there was anything they could have done to avoid the collision," Cox said. "There are some situations that you cannot drive defensively for."

State troopers are investigating the accident.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Three motorcycle riders died and three other people were injured in a five-vehicle collision Saturday morning in Corsicana.

The wreck happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the 8700 block of Farm-to-Market Road 709. A 1993 Ford truck, driven by William Lindsey of Corsicana, was traveling east when it veered into the west-bound lane for unknown reasons, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said.

The truck collided head-on with two motorcycles, killing David Coley, 54, Terry Newman, 61, and Leslie McCluney, 34, all of Corsicana. McCluney, a Corsicana High School teacher, was riding with on the same bike as Newman, her father. The truck was overturned upon impact, the DPS spokesman said.

Motorcyclists Robert Gonzales, 54, and Leslie Casey, 54, both of Waco, tried to miss the truck. Gonzales missed but turned over his bike. Casey’s motorcycle hit the back of the truck. Gonzales is in fair condition at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and Casey is in fair condition at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Lindsey was treated and released from Parkland Hospital .

The motorcyclists were participating in a motorcycle ride to raise money for a dance team at Corsicana High School, the DPS spokesman said.

Tragic, former Corsicana Police Chief G.M. Cox was among the riders in Saturday's event. He said he was about "a minute or so" behind the group of cyclists who were struck.” I don't think there was anything they could have done to avoid the collision," Cox said. "There are some situations that you cannot drive defensively for."

Just underscores when you are on the road you got to give it your all….and sometimes that still isn’t enough.

God be with them and their families.
