bformby@dallasnews.comA Corsicana High School teacher and her father were among three people killed in Navarro County on Saturday morning after a pickup swerved head-on into a group of motorcyclists on a ride benefiting the school's dance team. Three others were injured.
Teacher Leslie Tahamia McCluney, 34, her father, Terry Paul Nelson, 61, and real estate agent David Edmond Coley, 54, all of Corsicana, died at the scene.
"Leslie was a very good science teacher," Corsicana schools Superintendent Don Denbow said in Saturday's online edition of the Corsicana Daily Sun. "She was one of those special people who could connect with her students and get the most out of them."
A Department of Public Safety spokesman said 54-year-old William Jack Lindsey Jr. was driving a 1993 Ford pickup east on FM709 outside Corsicana when he entered the westbound lanes and collided head-on with the Harley-Davidson motorcycles driven by Coley and Nelson. McCluney was a passenger on Nelson's motorcycle. It was unclear what caused Lindsey to swerve into the motorcyclists.
Lindsey's truck overturned after the initial collisions, authorities said. Motorcyclist Robert Gonzales, 54, of Waco swerved and avoided a collision with the truck. Leslie Casey, 54, of Waco also swerved but struck the overturned pickup.
Lindsey was treated and released from Parkland Memorial Hospital on Saturday. Authorities said Saturday that Gonzales was listed in fair condition at Parkland and Casey was listed in fair condition at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.
The DPS spokesman said that more than 30 motorcycles were making a 90-mile charity run when the accident occurred about 9:25 a.m.
Former Corsicana Police Chief G.M. Cox was among the riders in Saturday's event. He said he was about "a minute or so" behind the group of cyclists who were struck.
"I don't think there was anything they could have done to avoid the collision," Cox said. "There are some situations that you cannot drive defensively for."
State troopers are investigating the accident.
