Can't get enough...

Santa Fe, TX

« on: July 13, 2009, 06:44:42 AM »

Anybody in Houston have the special tools, Honda or otherwise, that I might rent, or borrow?  I have limited time to get this done before I seize up (from lack of Valk) like the clutch did Saturday night....
Or, if anyone wants to observe or help, give me a shout!

It is a little painful, but this can be done without any special tools. You can power the main nut off with an air wrench, pull the basket and have a shop put the new parts in and compress the basket. The painful part is slowly tapping each ring into alignment when you put the basket back in. Took us a couple of hours. The guys at my local dealer were really cool, charged me $20 for putting the new plates in and re compressing the basket. There are also several good threads in the archives that will show you how to engineer some work arounds.

Thanks a lot, Ghillie.  I have pored over the threads and other online resources, and am ready to do it.  I got the bike in the air this morning, and will pull the clutch tonight or tomorrow am.  I have the air wrench, and a BIG vise, so I am probably OK.  I'll just need to borrow or fabricate the holder for removing the spring clip.  I'll try to remember to take pictures, but you won't see nay fingernail polish!  ;-)

I have the modified sockets to remove the nuts on the shafts but haven't had to make anything for the basket it self. You are welcome to use the sockets if ya need them. You will need to hook up with me tonight cause I'm leaving town early AM wednesday. You can reach me at 281-366-0234 till about 2:45 today. I'm in the Tomball/Woodlands area

Sorry to butt in but...
You do not pull the basket to replace the clutch.
You pull the clutch pack.
And after you assemble the new clutch pack use a rig like this to hold some tension on the plates it is just a couple of pipe couplers for spacers, and extra long metric bolts...

Put the clutch pack back into the basket under the bike, with light pressure on the rig, makes it easy to get every thing lined up.
Once everything is lined up so it slides in and out easy, increase the tension on the rig to keep it all in place, don't go nutz and break anything.

Then pull it out and use this "rig" to compress the clutch pack and install the spring.
Obviously this same "rig" is used to remove the clip from the pack to replace the disks also.
This will keep everything lined up and it will slide right in, no tapping required.

Just finished the test ride...SWEET!  I am sure I did something dumb tying to refill the hydraulics, but it finally came around.  Will post pics tomorrow evening, since I have to be at work early.  No bumming a ride, though!  ;-)
Thanks so much for the posts, messages, and phone calls!  Y'all are the best!
