Looking at rebuilding my 99 interstate, son T-Boned a car no one hurt. Bike needs frame and forks no other damage no leaks starts and runs. Where can a good frame be bought. new prefer, I want to license it or a used one that is straight not damaged. Is it best to go with stock forks or after market?
Thanks

Maybe Pinwall Cycle or another salvage yard.  Pinwall sells all the parts to wrecked bikes including the frame.  BUT I would make sure the frame wasn't the reason for the salvage and that it could be re-titled in your state.

pinwall wont supply a clean or salvaged title with there frames they claim its ohio policy to return the title to the state after bike is parted out one of the companys from Arizona that sells parts on ebay told me that they can supply a clean title if the bike wasn't wrecked I was able to get a frame from a VRCC member for a project I had started

Most big auto salvage yards are connected in a nationwide/collective parts locator database (there may be more than one).  If they don't have what you want, they generally can find it, or put out a request to the salvage world asking who has it.

I'd get on line and try to discover if the big bike salvage yards have such a database and if so, get a request for your parts out on it.  Yeah, PinWall is the big stick for Valk parts, but you never know what you might find, maybe within driving distance (and maybe get a title with a frame?).

I just found these, never used them.

The HDL parts fiche shows the frame....might want to call them.  I would imagine they come with a VIN if available.

I have seen them cost anywhere from 350.00 and up used most salvage places want around 500.00 and that was without a title from pinwall plus shipping of course

It's very unlikely they will answer your email based on my past experience...you need to call and speak to someone directly is my recommendation.  They get tons of emails and I've never gotten a reply to mine.

I just sold one with a clean title for $300 + $100 shipping. And, no, I don't have another one. But I have seen them go in this price range elsewhere.

I don't understand all the fuss...

The VIN is printed on a sticky backed piece of plastic film attached to the neck of the frame.

It is simply a matter of removing the VIN from the replacement frame and sticking your VIN label there.

Or just leave it off.

In all my years I have never heard of anyone looking for the VIN on a motorcycle.

I have taken metal stamping letters/numbers and hammered in the VIN on a few frames that caused no problems with the state boys!

You could probably hammer your VIN onto an extra frame you get hold of and that would be easily accepted by any LEO as long as you have the registration that matches. What do they know?
Answer: Only what you show them.

Even after removing the swing arm to shorten the box it is still over size and over weight. Mine was 86 pounds. It didn't matter whether it was being shipped to a residential or commercial address and I have both FedEx and UPS accounts. It was about $102.00.

I understand RickyD's perspective on the VIN number swapping but I'd sure hate to be the one that gets challenged about a legal VIN. They can simply take the bike on the spot and then it's up to you to prove that everything is legal and right with your bike. I had a friend take a trailer to the Highway Patrol because the fellow that welded it up didn't get a VIN for it. The HP guys very, very, nearly took the trailer away on the spot. He had stepped into it big time. Eventually he worked it out because everything was on the up-and-up. I'm pretty sure that if he had an incorrect or forged VIN on the frame he would have walked home - at best.

the original vin of the bike is stamped in the metal on the frame neck behind the headlight and is also on the sticky backed piece of plastic film and true I doubt most LEOS  aren't going to go thru the double check on the numbers but I wouldn't want to test my karma if I could get my hands on a legal title and frame for a few hundred bucks by time you get it all worked out the storage fees at the impound would stack up quick

If you go mucking with the VIN # and you get caught, kiss the article bye bye and expect a prison term for it also.

The prison term depends upon how hard ass the County/state attorney's office is.

California, you get a sentence of 3 years, and have to serve about 18 to 20 months.

I went out and looked and did find the VIN number stamped of the frame neck.

First I find out about that!

I would never suggest to alter a VIN number.

Especially one that's stamped on the frame.

Back down herd!

When I powder coated my frame the plastic tag went away. When changing registration in different states they want to see the VIN before they will register it. When I moved back to Florida they came out to my house to read all the numbers stamped into the frame necks.

question  for BonS will ups or fedx ship a frame unboxed or shrinkwrapped or does it have to be in a box and did you make your own with a wood frame of some sort?

UPS and FedEx both will take an unboxed item. However, they charge extra for odd shaped items. What one hand gives the other takes away. I used two large 275# burst test, single wall, corrugated boxes. It's a bit tricky but I inserted one from each end resulting in almost a full length double-wall box. I also wrapped the entire frame in stretch wrap to protect from scuffing in case the corrugated broke through.

As an alternative you could use what is called "cohesive corrugated carboard". It comes in a roll and is treated on one side with a special glue that only sticks to itself but not what's in it. You'd be charged for an odd shaped package but it would work if you don't have access to big strong boxes.

A wood crate would certainly add a lot of weight and bulk resulting in even greater shipping charges than any other approach.
