« on: October 11, 2013, 06:16:08 AM »

Turned over and ran for a second this morning.
Gave her some more throttle, no start.
Put the choke on....no start and smelled gas.
Turned choke off opened throttle all the way........no start.
After a few trys the starter stopped turning.
When I push the starter button the headlights dim....so not the starter switch!?
Horn honks.battery good?
Pushed her back in the garage, conected her to the charger and took the car.

Where do I start with troubleshooting?  Don't wana miss the FC ride next week!!

battery is gone..
Yup...very likely.  Get the battery load tested to know for sure, or if the battery is old, just replace it.  Be sure to give the new one a full charge before installing it.

CAN NOT emphasize charging a new battery completely before use enough. A trickle charger over night. DO NOT install on the motorcycle and let the altenator do the charging. TRICKLE charger overnight. RIDE SAFE.

+1 Amazon usually has some good buys on Yuasa batteries. How old is the battery in your bike?

What brand battery?  Some off brands may not hold up as well as the better known ones.

I understand that it cranked for a second or two, but you might consider taking the plugs out and make sure there is no hydrolock.  Other than that sounds like battery.

Started right up last night after work after being on the charger all day.
Taking the battery out now to be tested and prolly replace it.
No hydrolok....put a danmarc in and rebuilt the petcock when I bought it.

Going to buy my wife a new helmet  too (full face).

It tested good, but I replaced it anyways.  It was an Auto Zone.
I got whatever Advance Auto sells.  At least they know me there.

I refuse to go to Auto Zone since they wouldn't replace some $4.00 convex mirrors that turned black after a few weeks.  So sorry, I can not help you sir!

Sounds similar to a problem I have had a couple of times. Bike will crank and crank and crank and almost start but not quite go. Hook up the booster cables and away it goes first time I hit the button. That monster needs every possible amp it can get to fire up all that horsepower.

If booster cables will do what the battery won't, you have a weak battery.  Either a new battery or a check of your charging system is required.  The other possibility is poor battery to starter and/or battery/starter to chassis connections.  If everything is good, a Valkyrie will start without issues at well-below-freezing temperatures.
