it basically is floating and relies on the dampers and splines for stability. That is correct. Now you have an additional problem because the wear on the wheel has opened up the clearances allowing more wobbling of the flange. More wobbling of the flange will result in excessive spline wear and damper wear. I'd suggest to increase the thickness of the thrust washer to take up the clearance, trying to get back to a normal condition. ***

While a couple more thou. on the thrust washer may help, to get to the root cause I think the dampers need tightened up like you were thinking,, or replaced,,, and it may be time to think about a "wing spline pressout" and flange while the wheel is still in relatively good condition.
I wonder how tight the Garys dampers fit in your other bike??

To be clear, I believe this wear was present prior to installing Gary's dampers. They were installed replacing stock dampers on 3/19/2011 at 54,030 miles or 33,645 miles ago. I can't seem to locate any pictures so maybe I neglected to take them at that time. The original dampers were much looser than The Gary's are now, so I think the damage was done. I'll compare the standard dampers when it is time to do the service on it. As far as replacing the splines goes, it doesn't appear to me that there has been a significant amount of wear since the last service, so I may look for a good 'wing rear end just in case, but I think there are still several thousands of miles left on these.

I got you,, and I do see that the splines could go for a LONG time with proper maintenance, especially if I was convinced that the damage was getting no worse..... Still, for me the priority would be preserving the wheel.
You sure do put the miles on those machines considering where you live...... I don't get that many and I'm riding today.

Simply replacing the dampers will not solve your problem and you will wear the new dampers out relatively quickly.
Until you fix the problem of the extra clearance that's a result of the wear to the wheel you can expect the splines to
continue to take the brunt of the problem along with the spacers when they start to loosen up, which they will.

Hey, 98 Pacecar, there's a method I use to remove and service the rear end without jacking the bike up more than 2-3". Much safer and you don't need an adapter. I just don't like the idea of over 750lbs. sitting there 2' in the air. If it starts to tip over you're not going to stop it. If it's only a couple inches off the deck, it will just lay over on the guards.
Shoot me a PM if interested.
