Can anyone out there replace a motherboard in an HP laptop?  Nancy's 18 month old PC went down and that seems to be the problem.

Cost of a motherboard????  Labor????

Thanks.

The cost of a new motherboard for a laptop will most likely be more than buying a new laptop. I've done this in the past a few times, and I watch eBay and find the same model on eBay that I'm trying to repair which is being sold for parts. To find a good motherboard, find one that has had the screen damaged (which is pretty common), and most likely the motherboard will be useable.
After you've scored a parts machine, go to HP's website, and do a search on your laptop to find the documents to disassemble the laptop. Laptops can be very tricky to disassemble, and if you're not careful, it's pretty easy to break something. Once you find the documents you need, first take the parts machine apart whereas you can get a little practice (if you miss a hidden screw and break something, it won't matter, and now you'll now what to watch for), and the swap the parts into your laptop.

Hope this helps!

If you can find one just like your wife's, but with a busted screen, that might be an easier fix.  Then move your good screen and your hard drive to the other laptop.  That's easier than changing the mb, but you'll still have to open the case to swap the screens.

It isn't hard if you know how, but laptops are built by evil elves rejected by Kiebler.  I've replaced the mb in one laptop and the screen in another, but I'd also developed and managed a laptop build-to-order program for CompUSA so had some training.

Overstock.com has some really good deals on used computers that have been refurbed.  That would be my suggestion as to the best course of action.

Appreciate the offer, but I really don't want it. Don't destroy it though, sell it on eBay. Depending on the model, you can get a decent amount of pocket change (or chrome money for your Valk) for it. You may be surprised how much it's worth. Just make sure to remove the hard drive first. Especially if you may have anything on it that you wouldn't want floating around the internet. It's pretty easy to do, and I'm sure that a quick internet search can provide the know how.

True, you can sell it on ebay.  If you don't want to go that course, pm me and I'll pay shipping to take it off your hands.

UNFORTUNATELY I will be out of town again... have been trying to get there for years.  If we can find someone locallyn to take it for me... have already got some things to take for me, but he is way south.

I will work something out.

Whatever you do with it, I would suggest removing the hard drive. There is probably personal info on it that can be retrieved.
