Hi all,

I bought a 97 Standard that hydrolocked and broke the starter gear and the guy I bought it from said it blew a head gasket. He replaced the gasket but it still did not run well. My plan is to pull the engine for the gear repair and remove both heads since he had one off and check the valves.

My plan is to repair the engine, rebuild the forks since they are leaking, rebuild all the calipers and
repack the u-joint and drive shaft. Just generally refurbish the bike since it has been sitting for years.

I understand there are some special tools needed to get to the starter gear and was wondering if anyone knew of a source for them other than Honda. Also, any advice/help on this project would be welcome.

I would post photos of this pretty girl, but I don't know how.

Jerry

If you don't already have one, build yourself a bench to work on the motor from, the engine will have to be pulled to repair the hydrolock damage. There is a wealth of knowledge on this board to aide and assist you in the repairs, may even have the tool needed to remove the needed items. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I have will chime in. Good luck and congratulations on the fine and rescue.

I have made m a decent table to work on it with, and people have chimed in. It is good to know about others and their beloved Valkyries.

Uturn, I just looked at your photos. I now know for sure I want to talk to you. I am not afraid to take it all apart, but I am now old enough to ask for advice.

Dancnman,

I'm between Tomball and The Woodlands. I made the sockets and will let ya use them. I pulled my I/S motor to replace the rear case due to the alternater bolts breaking off. Plenty of help around if ya need it. just ask.
