Need to know if I am supposed to use any Orange RVT when installing new copper exhaust gaskets ?  There is some orange rvt on the ones I removed.  maybe it was used to hold them in place.

I just replaced my gaskets last fall when I put my new pipes on. I just ordered them off ebay. No rtv needed because they are crush gaskets. Dont tightem them vey tight, just snug them then go for a ride to get them good and hot then snug them again. Check them again after a couple hundred miles then you will be set.

Oh does it matter what side is facing down?  Some had the split facing up and some down.  These are copper rings.

That's what these are copper crush. But they have a small thin line on one side and they are round and the ones that came out are now flat, but the thin line on 2 were facing up towards the head and the 3rd one had the thin line facing the exhaust pipes.
I haven't taken the other side off yet.

I have used a thin coat of grease only to hold the gaskets up in place, as it is a pain without it, they keep falling... especially if you are trying to mount an exhaust with stacks.

As far as the split face. I have never paid attention to where the split is when placing them. Never had a problem (2 or 3 exhausts mounted), so I can only surmise it makes no difference.

Good enough for me,  the other side was mixed also.

Going with ring towards head.

Thanks,

I bend them slightly out of true round, just by hand so they don't fall out of the recess..

Don't matter on the split, but I woudl put them in all split up, just because the sealing surface of the head is more uniform than the header.
