Can you use the IS ecm on a standard with the ect mod??? If you do, should you only use the stock trigger wheel??? Thanks, Jim

Yes, you can and stock TW only.

I have an I/S ICM, I/S carb springs with a simple ECT mod. Used a 1k resistor instead of a 3.9k so the timing is not too advanced.

Yep, I've got an I/S and run the stock trigger wheel. I did the ECT mod but put in the pot. That way I can turn it on, off, or have it anywhere in between.

Don't know that much about a pot, but what is in-between off and on?

Having it in between will not give you the full 10-degree advance. This is quite useful if you already have an I/S ICM, which already has a 2-degree advance built into it. The in-between setting is the same as going with a 1k Ohm resistor rather than a 3.9k Ohm, which is basically what I did.

@OP - It's not recommended to use an after market TW when you do the ECT mod. It's one or the other.

Don't know that much about a pot, but what is in-between off and on?

A pot is short for potentiometer. It's a variable resistor with a wiper and uses 3 wires. As you turn the pot, you move the wiper and change the resistance from the wiper to the end legs. One side will increase up to the total resistance of the pot and the other side will decrease proportionately.
If you only used the wiper and one end, that would be a rheostat. Confused yet?  Wink

Jim,
Both my 97 and 98 standards have the I/S ECM and I/S carb springs. My 98 also has the simple ECT, and I've never experienced any detonation,.....period.

My 2K I/S has a 4 degree TW,....also never experienced any problems ever. And I don't baby my bikes ever.

I am going to see how it goes with the 6 degree wheel.. I always use 93 oct I figure 5 gallons .20ct cost... If I can't afford a buck I should be riding a bicycle and driving a Prius..... Thank You for the info.

So, with the ect mod your advancing the timing 10° another 6° with the trigger wheel and another 2° with the I/s icm. Advancing the timing over stock has some benefits but 18° seems like way too much to me.

I would recommend that you to go back and read some of the posts on the forums regarding the use of the 6 degree TW with an I/S ICM. Even if you use 93 octane gas, you might have problems starting the bike with a 8 degree advance (2 + 6). The plus side of using an ECT mod is that the advance is not applied till the time you put the bike in gear.

I only ran it once so far... started same as always. let it warm up awhile and took it for around a 3mile ride before the weather took a dump. I was listening very hard to hear any detonation, heard none... I have a 4 degree and a stock wheel I want to experiment with. The butt dyno is very sensetive after a Very ----ing long winter. I owned this bike 97std till 2004 then sold it to a friend, he only put about 4000 miles on it,  I bought it back and it now has 33,000 on it. The problem is I can't remember all the mods that I had done to it. I know I polished the intakes,tw,k&n air filter and desmogged but I ma not sure on the carb springs. I was also wondering if anyone has had any success with dial a jet, or if it is worth it? Just trying to get a little more out her...
