Overflow is going to Fairfield Inn (I believe).

Anyone have a good lead on a close to the event hotel?

Residence Inn has an included hot breakfast, daily social hour and a heated indoor pool (or so I was told) and only $10 a night more (single bedroom with pull out sofa in the living)!

Any good lodges in the nearby area?

Go ahead and book at the overflow hotel and get on the waiting list at the Clarion.  The overflow hotel is giving us the same rates as the Clarion as well as offering a complimentary hot breakfast.  Mention that you are with the Valkyrie Riders.  Use our designated hotels as there will be other attendees staying there and they contribute to Inzane.

Yes, if in doubt, call the event hotel and get on the wait list and ask for the overflow...in case they fill up and another is needed?

With two daily meals, one of them a hot breakfast, and a private room more like home for about the same money, I'm thinking and leaning toward the Residence Inn...  Better value IMHO.

Not close to InZane, though, is it?

No, it isn't next door.  However, I am there to ride and it's only a short distance into town plus it's a nice area. Still deciding as there are a few other hotels closer at almost half the rate.  I think it's less than ten miles away.  Certainly can't get drunk and walk up to the room but I don't do a lot of drinking anyway. 50% of InZane might be hanging out in the parking lot at night...

My understanding is that the Residence Inn is a little over ten miles away.  The overflow hotel, Fairfield, is across the street and will be running a shuttle to and from the Clarion for anyone who doesn't want to ride for whatever reason.

Do what you choose for a place top stay.  My first InZane I stayed across town in another hotel.  I regretted not being at night where a lot of other InZaners were and I never did that again.

As I said, haven't firmed up my plans yet but the price of the event hotel is sizable compared to other venues. I often ride over 200 miles for lunch, 10 miles is nothing, especially when a free meal and drinks are  included in the price of the hotel.  The Residence Inn also has more of a home like setting with a full kitchen, living room area, multiple TV's, etc...  Your point about the group being at the hotel each evening is valid but the hotel is full. The more we talk about alternatives, the better they sound.  Next year, do you think they'll consider a Residence Inn or less pricey or price matched to amenities location.  Every hotel has a parking lot.

Honestly I won't be involved in planning for next year.

I will let you in on a couple of items.  One is that the staff negotiating fought really hard to get the price down as low a possible on the GZ hotel.  The management of the Clarion had good reasons for why they wouldn't go any lower.  We are in the middle of Asheville's tourist season so that limits our negotiating tools.  No one in the Asheville are that was of the size we needed would deal to go as low or lower than the Clarion.  Our negotiators did get the Fairfield to offer good reasons to be the overflow and match the GZ price.

The other item I'll let you in on is that no matter what we do for InZane there will be some dissatisfied.  If we go low price some will say they don't want to stay at such a junky hotel again even though we and a large portion of the VRCC find it more than acceptable.  If we choose some place really nice the price will be up a bit and some folks will say they don't want to pay that much again.

What strikes me as odd is the formatting of your question as to whether the VRCC would consider the Residence Inn or less pricey location.  The Residence Inn in to less but is more pricey.

Stay where you choose to stay.  For me the draw to InZane is the social time with VRCC people.  For me, after some ten InZanes, that means either Ground Zero or, if need be, the overflow hotel.  If your InZane experience is colored by your getting the best hotel experience you can possibly get (whatever elements that includes) your choices may be different than mine have been.

The week prior to our scheduled event, 6-1 to 6-6, the room rate is $89.  The week after, $94.
