Today was my 3rd day of travel to Sturgis.  Had an incident where the bike felt like it was running out of gas.  Felt a little hiccup at first, and then about 5 miles down the road it started losing power.  I was showing a third of a tank of gas.  Day before I ran it down to the flashing last bar and 2 weeks ago I ran it all the way to reserve, so I know the gas guage worked alright.  Turned it to reserve and it came back to life and no problems, stopped and got gas and away we went.  I was only about 140 miles into the tank when it happened and I could only put 4 1/2 gallons in when I filled it up.  Still kind of scratching my head on that one.  Also noticed that whenever I push the PTT switch on the CB, my speedometer quits working while the PTT switch is down.  When I let it go, the speedometer jumps back to speed.  Thats the only gage that does that.  What is that?

On my recent trip to InZane on my IS I too began to lose power with about half a tank of fuel remaining. I throttled down and began to drift to the shoulder. A loud BLAM! followed. I pulled over and shut down the engine and then opened the tank filler to let some air in just in case my vent tube was kinked and the tank had pulled some vacuum. I restarted and rode for another 5-600 miles without incident when again, at speed, I felt a loss of power but didn't immediately pull over but rather "felt" my way through the crisis. I determined that a slow-speed jet had clogged and I had lost a cylinder (As I'd rev up into the main jet territory all the cylinders would come to life). The clog unplugged itself within a couple of miles and all was well again. I think my first episode was also a piece of crud in a slow-speed jet in one of the six. Perhaps this is similar to your issue.

I don't have a clue on the CB/speedometer issue, though.

CB / Speedo -
I have found bad antenna connections to be the problem.  When the CB is working correctly, all the power goes through the cable to the unit and out the antenna when you transmit.  If there is a bad "match" on the antenna, the power gets reflected back into the system and will show itself by either killing the outputs of the CB or doing other strange things - like making the speedo "whack out!"  Check all your antenna connections and really clean them.  make sure they are good and retest.  Hope this helps.

Just for the 7734 of it, run a full can of Seafoam in a tank of fuel through it.   Sounds like you got some crappy gas & it is trying to clog your jets up, if that doesn't help ya, pull the petcock out of the tank & clean it up.   Wishing ya luck on just the FULL can of Seafoam.     This worked for me in Dayton one year,,,,   I'd gotten some crappy gas just North of the Motel.......

I've found the fuel guage to get weird at times on my IS, don't know why. It will show a couple solid bars but then it dies like yours did.  I go more by the odometer now, however, that is iffy too if I've been pushing it hard. I know I've got the reserve there so as long as I have enough to get to the next gas stop I'm good to go. Don't have a CB.

Harley Jones and I were heading back to Minnesota from Inzane in Frisco Colorado 2006. We were on Interstate 80 in Western Nebraska doing 80-85 in the 112 degree heat. we both had that same thing happen at the same time. we also switched to reserve and slowed down to 70, that cured the problem. we had just filled up at the last town in Colorado with regular gas. we pulled into the next gas station and filled up with premium and never had the problem again. I read later that the hotter it is out, the higher the octane needed. I also added the 1/2 " spacer under the front of the tank. YEP both Interstates.
