So here she is. Granted I was able to figure out this picture posting thing. laugh wife picked her up, took some pictures verifying hydro lock.  Broken starter gears and rear case.  Needs the fork seals replaced and new tires.  Got the parts ordered for the forks, rear case, and gears Grin  Cheesy gonna be starting the rebuild process when I get back in from offshore.  More pics to come through the repair process, and I'm sure lots of questions too.  Can't wait to get her running!

Congratulations on the bike..  It will be a fun project and a fabulous bike..

Lots of great hills and twisties around Lafayette...  Joking of course.  However you really should take the valk out west to the twisted sisters in Texas and the tail of the dragon in NC.  Arkansas also has some great riding.  Your new valk will make all of those trips seem too short.

The local SCRC chapter has some nice people in it however they usually ride a bit slow for my tastes.

No big deal but just for the record the 11 miles of 318 curves is in The Great State Of Tennessee. North Carolina does have the store at Deal's Gap for t-shirts and stickers.

No wonder my GPS had such difficulty finding it!!!

Thank you for clarifying that and I own up to making the mistake.

started the work a couple days ago.  Got the motor pulled and the rear case removed. found another broken gear so now im just waiting on the part to come in so i can re assemble her.  heres some pics so far.

carbs pulled and torn apart for their rebuild and repair

motor pulled on the work bench starting the break down

the clutch pack and plate that needs to be removed

plate off remove nut to pull clutch plates out

clutch plates removed

clutch basket left first specialty tool nut in the center.  used a 1 13/16 homemade long socket with impact

second specialty tool nut on output shaft used 1 7/16 homemade long socket with impact

rear case removed inspecting gears

found another broken gear just one tooth cracked and bent over.  waiting on this part to come in

3 teeth missing on the transition gear found 2 still searching for the third

sorry about the crappy quality pictures using a phone dont have a camera any more.  so far so good on the tear down.  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  hope this helps with others repairing a hydrolock.

No suggestions.

But thanks for sharing (and helping me stay on top my petcock and carbs, so I never have such excitement).

We are going through the same thing with my brothers bike. Just waiting for the 1 gear and rear case gaskets to get here. Pulled the carbs last night and let all the metal parts soak in lacquer thinner over night and reassembled everything this afternoon. Carbs looked great which leads me to believe the petcock was letting gas leak down the vacuum tub to #6 cylinder and locked it up. Got a new pingle petcock on order to put on. It has been a fun project for me dad and my brother to work on together. The oem pipes are pretty crappy so I sanded the headers and sprayed them with black header paint. Everything else is in great shaper and cleaned up to look nearly new. Monday we will be piecing the motor back together and hopefully get it back in the bike tuesday. Think my dad has caught the bug because he is looking for another hydrolocked valk to restore. Good luck with yours.

Thank you so so much for posting this and keeping a record of how it's done I know I'll be referring to this when I go to take mine apart to do the exact same process.

so just realized when putting her back together, my buddy pulled the plug wires out of the coil packs without labeling them.   :ticked off:  i don't know which coil packs go to which corresponding cylinders.  i know 1 and 2 go on one 3 and 4 on another and so on I'm just not sure which of the 3 packs they go in.  is it standard for all valkyries or am i about to have a major headache on my hands.   also when i bout the bike the starter was already out of it.  looking at it, i believe theres supposed to be a ground cable coming off the back of it but i don't have the wire or the bolt.  if anyone could enlighten me on my situations i'd appreciate it.  and i know a service manual most likely had all this information in it, but i was too stubborn to order one yet.  Undecided  uglystupid2  uglystupid2 crazy2

You can download the manual in PDF form for free..  Might take a couple of tries as it is a big file and sometimes it gets corrupted in transfer.

I can post the link later from a PC (on my phone now)  if no one beats me to it.

alright so bike is up and running. got a couple fuel leaks i got to take care of which means out come the carbs again, and a new petcock in my future.  having an issue with the clutch though.  bled the bubbles out of the system and still cant get any pressure on the handle.  figuring it needs a new piston set.  anybody had this problem and it not been the piston set?  jsut curious before i start spending a bunch of money on parts i dont need.

When you have trouble getting pressure in the brake lever we tie the brake lever to the handle bar and let sit over night. Many bike shops do the same thing it gives the bubbles time to rise to the top of the lines.
It would be worth a try with the clutch lever.

Bike is driving!  Cheesy  Grin  Am absolutely pleased and excited about this bike with all the work put into. I'm having an issue with the throttle though.  If I go more than half throttle, it cuts out horribly and loses all power.  I'm thinking it's cause I don't have the carb sync done yet but would like others to weigh in if their might be another problem.  I appreciate all the help from everyone that helped personally and everyone on this site for all the posts and tech answers to give me the confidence to take on the endeavor. cooldude

You  are doing an incredible job with this.  Both the project and the documentation.

Where  do you find broken bikes like this?  I have been watching Craigslist for months....

figured out the problem.  Had the some tubes hooked up wrong.  Re arranged the hoses, and wow now she flies.  I picked this bike up from a bank that repoed it.  Just got lucky that a friend had a relative that worked there.

So how much did this entire endeavor run you to do the repairs and get your bike back up and running. I know I am looking at the exact same costs and I am going to try and do all this work myself as you did

Yours looks very similar to mine when it hydro locked.  I needed a new rear case also.  Make sure you find all the pieces!

I ordered from partzilla.com seemed to be the cheapest.  It cost around 360 dollars for the gears the rear case and seals for the forks.  The main gear with the cracked tooth was 80 something since I had to go to the honda shop to order it. ( faster shipping and i was a lil anxious to get her on the road)  the two specialty tools were sockets i had in an oversized socket set i picked up at harborfreight years ago.  the work really isnt too bad but is easir with help.  its definitely a great feeling doing the work yourself.  sorry it took so long for a reply i hope this still helps out and feel free to ask any questions.  as much help as i got on here i definitely want to pay it forward.  cooldude

Your broken parts were a little more extensive than my brothers bike, glad you got it back on the road. It is much easier with help. If we would have had all the parts from the beginning we could have done it in 2 days instead of 2 weeks. But we did do a bunch of other maintenance since the bike was new to him.

Ya it's never any fun opening a motor up and finding more broken parts.  They take too long to come in.   tickedoff  it was nice knowing she runs, now I just got to get the fork seals replaced so I can consider her road ready.   I did get pretty lucky that the de smog was already done, and from what I could see done correctly.   What other maintenance did y'all do since it was a new to him bike.  Anything specific I should definitely check out?

Just the usual, all new fluid, new pingle petcock, new tires, rear end grease, new brakes, desmog, and cleaned everything really good. Also added new air horns. He recently fell into a russel day long seat. It did have a left leaky fork but has since stopped, thats a winter project. He is also working on getting a trunk for it and also talking about a woodys fairing. I told him he should have just bought an interstate  Grin

Haha I've been thinking the same thing.  I got a good enough deal on this one though I could add all that and come out ahead or at least even.  Ill need new tires soon so I figured I'd do the splines the. And unfortunately the forks are still leaking so that's the project I get to do along with a pet ock and fuel shutoff.  Won't be back in until mid November so ill have plenty of time to memorize the repair procedures.  Y'all had any luck finding another hydrolocked valk?  I was gonna fix this bike with my dad but since I live in Louisiana and he's in Kansas made it a no go.

I forget, it's been awhile, but I'm sure you can find out that info with a search, 6 or 12 point.

I took mine apart without an impact, just an extension on the breaker bar.

Just found this posting, probably too late to add my .02 but: when I started my project bike for the first time, man, what a feeling! This is fabulous! Rode most of the day and could not wait to get back on it and ride some more!
Trouble was, the fuel had filled up MOST of the cylinders! Not even a slight bit of turnover. Pulled out all 6 plugs, spun it and saw 5 or 6  spewing fountains of fuel, and then ordered a set of float needles. It seems that 4 or 5 of them had gotten weak due to useage and age and would not stop any fuel flow. I got lucky.
I  would not trust the ones in your carbs. Even if you added a Pingel or some other fuel shutoff part. Yes it is a pain to get the carbs off, but if you have done it as many times as most of us have, it almost isn't too bad of a job.
Anyway, that was my two cents. Enjoy! And come on down to Wiggins.  Not that far away. I will show you the Valkyrie I built from scratch using parts from the internet. cooldude
