Spline and pinion spline ques.

I bought a extra rear dif. I know the pinion spline is bad. Teeth come to a angle point.
Ques. is Do the rear dif spline also wear to a angle point. Which these havent. But Was wondering do those splines wear down top edge and still keep the sq. teeth look. They look still sq. But didnt know if maybe the top edge had wore down any where is less sq. rise. Hope not to confuse.

ok, they dont have the point are sq. but didnt know if the top edge wore any leaving less depth and still staying sq. Thought is was odd that the pinion teeth wore so bad and maybe not the drive spline. Maybe they didnt pull the drive shaft but maintained the drive spline. Any idea?

Without a picture its hard to say if you got a good replacement or a headache. Replacing the Pinion cup is no big deal. IF the drive splines are worn, well essentially that drive is a waste of money as a spare.
You must have gotten a real good price to buy it not knowing.

Maybe a few photos of drive shaft splines and pinion cups in various states of wear will help. These aren't my pictures. I just found them elsewhere on VRCC board postings.
These parts look to be in decent condition. Maybe not new but just fine.
On the other hand these pictures show wear on the parts.
Some mileage is still possible using these parts but wear is evident:
Here are some dead, toasted drive shaft splines and a pinion cup.
This bike couldn't go any farther:
And then there's the totally dead, dried out, worn out variety that suffered from lack
of lubrication (for whatever reason).

Keep in mind the drive splines(the big gear facing the wheel), can be replaced with the same part from a Gold Wing rear end. Those parts can be pressed out/in, making an otherwise useless final drive whole again. At one time, I picked up a used Wing final off ebay for $45 to fix a worn Valk final, a friend did the switch with his press, giving me a spare final to use if ever needed.

Yeap, my bike could go no further. But it looked just like the last set in the series when I opened it... Looked like rust powder. It was "wet" looking after I applied Liquid Wrench in an attempt to free the pinion cup nut.
Since the last two servicings at two different bike shops by "certified professionals" OBVIOUSLY did not service the splines when my tires were changed, I will be doing my own servicing from now on. I find my rates are very reasonable and the quality of service is much higher.
