Been lookin' for a final drive, in good shape, and finally scored at Pinwall $214 delivered My Valk ('97 Standard) has @ 65,000 miles. The first three tire changes were done by a dealer (two different dealers), and obviously they didn't do it as they should have. Once I started doing the tire changes, I noticed my drive spline was almost 1/3 gone (at maybe 20K miles)... I've kept it lubed and follow the procedure for the sequence of torqing everything in order, and I've made it this far, without too much further wear. So now, I've got a winter project... Looks like the best deal for a drive spline is about $143 at Direct Line. If someone knows of a less expensive alternitave, I'd like to know about it. Here is a pic, of the one I just got from Pinwall, and I think it looks pretty darn good. While watching the video that they include of the bike running, before it is parted out, I saw the odo said 31K miles on it... Black Dog

I pickup up a spare awhile back because my lady has 107K on her and I didn't want to be caught in a bind one day. Well I just pulled the final drive saturday and the splines still look like new. I've been running a grease made for off shore use . It's sold by Royal Purple and after 15k since the last service it still looked like the day I put it in there. It's only about 5 dollars a grease gun size tube and I'm still on my first tube after several changes.

Nothing does the soul more good than pulling the rear end apart and seeing a beautiful set of splines. I have been blessed and will not allow a dealer (or anyone else for that matter) to touch my rear end ...

looking at the fine print of both, they are the same, probably just a new packaging scheme.

Shark,
First place was Southeast Sales (76th & Good Hope), and the other was Waukesha Power Sports (in Wauesha, Duh). Attitude at both places.
Best local dealer, IMHO, is Cedar Creek Motor Sports (Cedarburg). They did fork seals for me, just before the first Frisco InZane, and when I picked up the bike, the service manager asked if I had some time to spare, because he wanted his crew to clean up my bike, before I took it home. For the next 15 minutes, he had 3 shop boys attack the Valk with Honda Shine... Looked brand new when done!

Did that rear end come with the matching wheel spline? My problem with Pinwall is you have to buy an entire rear wheel to get that matching part. I'm not sure you can match a worn (not new) rear end with a brand new wheel spline. My rear wheel splines are about 60% gone, so I'm babying the bike 'till winter (which is only another 7 weeks here in NH). Then I'll simply rebuild mine with all new parts. (And order a 20 year supply of thrust washers and o-rings, before they disappear for good.) BTW: do Gold Wings have the same problems with the drive splines? I can't imagine that they once or twice a year disassemble the entire ass-end, clean, inspect, replace all three o-rings, replace the thrust washer, grease the hell out of everything, and then wrestle the pig wheel back on. Kind of makes me nostalgic for the reliability of Harley's drive belt, which can go 80,000 miles and never need an adjustment.

..yeah on the belt drive. Buddy of mine took his to Alaska. Got a small rock on the belt, under the sprocket and the belt broke. No problem, he carried a temporary spare...lasted 15 miles. Swingarm must be removed to install a new belt.

Did that rear end come with the matching wheel spline?Spoff, No, it did not. From what I can see in the picture, the Pinwall part looks to be as close to new as possible... I'm gonna order a wheel drive spline from HDL ($143 shipped), and take my chances. No matter how ya look at it, it's waaay better than what I've got under me now Black Dog
