I'd like to widen the prayer request for Colorado VRCC brother Darby, a.k.a Hager the Horrible.  While details are currently sketchy, he went down outside Canyon City and was airlifted to Penrose Main in Colorado Springs.  I have met some incredible people in the VRCC; I'm sometimes humbled to be in their presence.  Really class acts.  Darby is a great man.

I've only taken several rides with Darby but he has a humble, gentle and very approachable nature that impressed me from the get go.  Over time, and in some very genuine conversations, I learned a good deal about him and have grown to respect him very much.

Darby is an ordained minister, not that anyone would know it.  He is certainly no bible thumper, and he has his vices.  He told me he has no desire to start a church or generate a following.  Darby said a church consists of fellowship between like minded folk (believers).  The thing that really impresses me about Darby is his love for children.  He and his wife are raising their grandson, who had been in a terribly abusive situation due to drug (and child) abusing parents, particularly the father.  He loves that boy like nothing else, and his eyes sparkle when he talks about him.  I don't know that I've seen such pride and love reflected on a man's face.

Another thing Darby speaks of with pride is his son who is ministering in Iraq.  You heard me.  Let it sink in.  Ministering in Iraq.  In these dangerous times.  Darby is not without concern, but he is so very proud of his son.  Sorry I have forgotten the son's name.

Darby told me just yesterday that the ONE thing he believed God commands -- and he emphasized commands -- is to look after the children.  That said, he mentioned he had just received state licensure for a running an emergency shelter for abused children.  Children coming directly out of very traumatic situations and needing immediate protection, shelter and most importantly love.  Probably on a temporary basis, until more permanent arrangements and hopefully placement into loving families.

Finally, Darby shares a medical condition with me -- without going into detail a GI disorder that caused him to lose a yard of his intestine in an emergency surgery.  He can relate to this like few people I've met, and just yesterday was again motivating me to pursue getting it taken care of before I too end up in the emergency room.  On a trip last summer he showed up bearing black licorice drops, which really do soothe the condition when it flares up.  He wouldn't take any payment for four boxes of the medicinal candy, even though he had to special order case batches of this particular (high licorice oil content) brand from out of state.

So, now you also know Darby.  He is far from "Horrible".  And he needs your prayers.

This video was taken yesterday, 8/31/14.  Our group is leaving Silverton and heading up Molas Pass.

Hager the GREAT is the man just in front of me on the red and black interstate.

Thank you Seth for sharing, I had talked to Damon earlier and it is certainly alarming to hear the news. We, here in Idaho will lift him up and his family in prayer.

Brothers and Sisters of the VRCC,

I spent most of the afternoon today with Darby riding immediately behind me as we traveled from Lake City, CO to Canon City, CO.   Just outside of Canon City traffic got heavier as everyone was returning from the Labor Day weekend.  Our group of 7 bikers got a bit jumbled - and I lost track of Darby.  We thought that perhaps he broke off to head home (he lives not too far from Canon City).  We were deeply disturbed when one of our tail guys showed up with news of Darby's crumpled bike by the side of the road - he had been air evacuated to Colorado Springs.  I just returned from Penrose Hospital where the doctors have removed his spleen and are currently working to relieve bleeding to his brain.  The doctor told his wife, Terri, that his condition was 'very serious'.   He suggested they have family gather.  She asked if it was necessary for out of state family to come. He said, 'Yes'.   That's all I've got right now.  Terri has family with her right now as she awaits news from the operating room. My wife and I prayed with her and her daughter there.  I'm sure she (and he) would appreciate all of our prayers.  I agree with Seth, in his earlier blog.  Darby is an amazingly ordinary extraordinary human being. Exactly what I appreciate about the folks at the VRCC.

Darby, Family and Friends, very sad to hear the news; you all are in my thoughts. Enjoyed getting to know you and riding with you/Darby this weekend. It was a great comfort knowing you and Ron were riding behind me on the final leg to Lake City yesterday. Hoping, praying for your recovery. June

This weekend was my first opportunity to meet and ride with Darby. I feel we  struck up a bond because we both ride red and black Interstates so we had some fun joking about if we were getting on the right bikes. I really enjoyed talking to him and enjoying time and meals together. My thoughts and prayers to my kind and gentle new friend and his family.

"Gods Will be done with Darby" And Gods Peace to his family!

That's a good prayer.  I too am praying that God will hold Darby and his family in His hands during this tough time and that His grace will provide even beyond.

It happens so quickly, doesn't it?  We're all on the edge every minute.

This is a text that I just received from pastor Dean.
Darby is in intensive care. Hasn't yet been conscious. Police say he was passing at about 60 mph, crossed the double yellow and totaled a van. He was heading up the hill near the royal Gorge turn off. They haven't closed his head or his abdomen yet. He may have a broken neck and has a broken ankle. I'm waiting to see him after the CT scan.
