Once again my OEM Alt. Cover has begun to "wrinkle".

FYI--

1.  HDL price $180. + S/H+7.5% tax--
2.  My Local Motorsport price= including tax-less 10% GWRRA= $212.00!!!
3.  ReChromer (got site from VRCC board) Quoted $150.00!!!

The last one I bought a couple of years back was about $50.00!!
I guess I'll just wait until it gets a little worse, then peel and paint it black!!

Once again my OEM Alt. Cover has begun to "wrinkle".

With sidestand down, I've found that overflow from the gas cap dribbles down the left side of the fuel tank and lands on the alternator cover.

It's the plastic shrinking from the curing process that makes the chrome plating wrinkle.

Ordered my alternator cover in October 2012 from Cheap cycle parts for 40.12. Glued some heat shielding material to the inside of the cover. Bought the material at a hardware store, cheap, silver in color. I thought heat from the engine and alternator might be wrinkling the chrome. Have put 10,000 miles since in the hot south Texas heat with no wrinkles so far.  Good Luck,  Firefighter

Ricky, I think that you are right.  To my knowledge, I've never had a fuel leak.  My covers seem to last about 80 to 90K, then wrinkle.  I'm on my third one now at 289K.  I tend to think that the problem is chrome on plastic.

Firefighter--I just tried to phone Cheapcycleparts at 4:55pm,but I guess they were already closed. Anyway, the OEM part # was not listed on their parts list. I'll try to phone them tomorrow.

I was wondering if the chrome would come off by soaking in brake fluid, like you would do to strip paint off?

Then I would get it powder coated chrome.

I thought powder coating only worked metal ? And do they have a chrome powder ?

powder coating needs to be cured at 390 to 400 degrees F,,,,  can the plastic cover take that?

"I was wondering if the chrome would come off by soaking in brake fluid"       No,, the chrome plating on plastic is real chromium which will not dissolve in brake fluid,, it is made to adhere to surface by embedding the surface of the plastic piece with copper particles.

Earl,  Just looked at cheapcycle parts site and found the cover under alternator, but for 171.00. I know what I paid as I keep records, 40 dollars and twelve cents, so I must have had a good deal! I don't have time now but will try to locate a cheap one if you don't find it first.  Firefighter

While warming up my Valkyrie a couple of days ago I notice that the cover for

the reservoir is starting to show the same signs. ie, wrinkling of the chrome plating.
