This has been discussed on the main board, but since some of ya'll don't venture outta the Texas sandbox, wanted to post it here too... Evidently they snuck through a new law effecting motorcycles here in The Republic that went into effect on January 1st. It includes a very vague provision about motorcycles capable of carrying a passenger have to have a handhold for a passenger... But doesn't define what that is... http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,74633.0.html

Found this info in an article on the law.
- Punishable by fine up to $500 and a Class C misdemeanor. - Ban on passengers for bikes not designed for passengers. - Licensing and training procedures for three-wheeled motorcycles.
*I found another page that said it's a Class B misdemeanor and a $2000 fine. So even that isn't clear.

Hopefully they're targeting the Crotch Rocketeers whose passenger have almost no seat and never a back rest/sissy bar. Possibly another 'legal' tool for them to create a legitimate stop on those folks

Possibly another 'legal' tool for them to create a legitimate stop on those folks Not a bad observation. In fact several of the articles say that it's a "targeting law" but many comments also note that what starts off to attack one group of riders is bound to eventually spread to other groups including cruiser and tourer riders.

I'm sorry for this family's tragic loss, but this is a bad overreaction. Anyway, here is the current provision http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.545.htm Sec 545.416 Like you, I have read it is only Class C misdemeanor. My passengers use my backrest as a hand hold, but I've probably got the old seat strap handhold somewhere in the attic if I get concerned.

For those that don't want to peruse that long, boring document;
Sec. 545.416. RIDING ON MOTORCYCLE. (a) An operator of a motorcycle shall ride on the permanent and regular seat attached to the motorcycle.
(b) An operator may not carry another person on the motorcycle, and a person who is not operating the motorcycle may not ride on the motorcycle, unless the motorcycle is:
(1) designed to carry more than one person; and
(2) equipped with footrests and handholds for use by the passenger.
(c) If the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person, a passenger may ride only on the permanent and regular seat, if designed for two persons, or on another seat firmly attached to the motorcycle behind or to the side of the operator.
(d) Except as provided by Subsection (e), an operator may not carry another person on a motorcycle unless the other person is at least five years of age. An offense under this subsection is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $100 or more than $200. It is a defense to prosecution under this subsection that the operator was operating the motorcycle in an emergency or for a law enforcement purpose.
(e) Subsection (d) does not prohibit an operator from carrying on a motorcycle a person younger than five years of age who is seated in a sidecar attached to the motorcycle.
Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, Sec. 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.
Amended by:
Acts 2009, 81st Leg., R.S., Ch. 1257 (H.B. 537), Sec. 3, eff. September 1, 2009.
Acts 2013, 83rd Leg., R.S., Ch. 1111 (H.B. 3838), Sec. 3, eff. September 1, 2013.

Since no one appreciated my comments on the main thread, I'll post it here.
The 2014 Valkyries have passenger hand holds. My daughter says that they are useless with out a back rest/sissy bar.
I find them handy for strapping my laptop down. In my accident the laptop was not injured.

Was your laptop also using the foot pegs?
