I did some something stupid and now I am paying for it, tried to lift some thing a little to heavy, around 300 lbs, pulled the muscles in my lower back and left hip. Doc put me on some muscle relaxants and sent me to therapy daily for the next week. Right now walking bent over and a heavy limp. So no riding for me for a while. I doubt I could lift a leg over the bike. Seems like the older I get the dumber I become.

Aww c'mon Bill, you know that old joke about being twice as strong now as I was at 18?  Wink Guess it doesn't apply when trying to dead lift all that weight. Believe me, you don't have a corner on doing stuff like that. Just take the "happy" pills and PT, it will work out.....eventually.

Almost like you and I are taking turns, I can almost tolerate the back but the hip is really painful. I had to borrow my wife's cane today, now she has something else to pick on me for.

Sorry to hear it Bill.

For me, simple walking helps my (chronic) back more than anything.  But with a bad hip, maybe not.

I have had to lay off heavy stuff for a few years.  If I can't use a dolly or wheelbarrow or something else, it just has to sit there.

In the process of demolishing a giant concrete fountain.  I hammer it a bit and put pieces the trash.  Sort of like the tortoise and the hare story.

I was trying to move a concrete slab, 4ft X 3ft and about 4 in thick. Managed to lift it from one side, then tried to turn it, that is when all hell broke loose. Then got smart and lifted it with the shop engine crane, but the damage was all ready done. I will not try that again.

At our age, we have to use the brain power more and the body power less.

The last time I really screwed up my back, I spent a number of days crawling around my house and was barefoot the whole time because I could not even get close to putting any sox on.  And now have a permanent dysesthesia (sort of half asleep) in my right shin area.  I learned my lesson, and although I am careful with lifting heavy stuff, any bending and twisting motion at the same time can be bad mojo, even with little force or weight at all.  The lifting then pushing it to one side did it.

I also try to wear a back brace/belt for almost any physical labor.  More than anything else, it keeps me straight up and down with good posture all day, and reminds me to bend at the knees, not at the waist.

Heal up.  Avoid the pain meds, pain is our reminder we are still alive.

Bill

I can certainly relate as well.

"Our minds are willing but the flesh (insert back here!) is weak." Been there, done that, got the Drs. bills to show for it!

The good thing is that it usually heals on it's own, fairly quick. Have a brew or two and get well soon!

During my younger, and even stupider days, I used to pride myself on letting no inanimate object defeat me! Embarrassed
I used to dead lift a lot of "impossible stuff". Last time (1999 at eldest son's college graduation, and yes, alcohol WAS involved) I made a bet that I could pick the back of my son's roommate Toyota Corolla up off the ground.  Cheesy crazy2 uglystupid2

While I won the bet, I'm kinda sure that is the reason for a whole lot of muscular skeletal problems I now have. So, while you may think so Bill, you definitely do not have the concession of doing dumb stuff. It's in our DNA I think. Grin
