What did you add to the stable Dave? A pic would be great.

Decided I'm not riding enough to keep two Valk's so I began stripping all of the accessories I added to the standard.

« Reply #243 on: October 18, 2016, 05:46:09 PM »

I kept my std about a year after I got my IS. Hard to let one go but I did turn a 500$ profit after putting about 30K on it and about 1K in repairs and upgrades.

I have sold three bikes in my life. Lost 25$ on the first one after riding the crap out of it through college and bringing it down to Houston CL-350 Honda.
Second was a Jackal KZ 150 I doubled my money on after cleaning the carbs and putting fresh battery on. The last was my 98 std I sold for 500$ more than I paid for it. I think it had it's second set of tires on it when I got it and they were 10 years old.

Fix up your std and sell it to someone looking for a great bike to go some long miles.

Yesterday, I hooked up the battery charger to the Interstate to see if it would take a charge.

It did, so now I'm hoping it will keep one if I do my part and ride it regularly.   Roll Eyes

Then, I got after a pair of badly powder coated valve covers with a can of wrinkle finish. They had been laying around gathering dust and I believe they are going to turn out great.

Today, I rode the Interstate to the car wash to knock off the dust and run more carb cleaner through the jets. I keep telling myself I need to sell it - and then I ride it. I'm so conflicted.   ???

I feel your conflict, I've been threatening to sell my Standard for over four months but every time I go out there to get her ready to sell she sweet talks me into keeping her.

The list is long but on the new I/S changed exhaust ,front tire ,bra, oil temp gauge, air filter(replaced the k&N with oem ) oil, rear pumpkin oil, seats, extended handlebar, installed  loud new horn, cup holder got a newer rear wheel (chrome) for the car tire going on next ,even though I got to appreciate the ride with the Dunlop,Chantal prefers the stability of the dark side. Finally got to the fog lights again after 8 days out of town.  The LED bulbs came in and when installed, light right up.  Go figure.  No shorts in the system. Next, I'm going to jbweld the little spacers that are so hard to find and so easy to lose for the engine hangers onto the back of the engine hangers so that I have no reluctance to remove the tank in the future. Air filter was needing to be replaced so replaced it.  Now to purchase the timing belts for the 100K service.

They appear to be.  They are specific fog light replacement bulbs that are supposed to work with the reflector.  Right now, the lights are torn apart, hanging by one bolt, the pods are off, etc so won't know true effectiveness until I get them back together in a few days.  I believe they will work as lighting so people can see me - not sure if they will work so I can see more with them.

Will report more as I know more.

The LEDs sure look bright.  I am an idiot for not figuring the bulbs were burned out before tearing up the wiring looking for a problem that did not exist. uglystupid2

Anyway, while the tank is off, decided to take off some blue spot leds and replace with some better ones, put new ones in other areas and do the timing belt maintenance.  Gates belts arrived today and the idler tensioners are due at the end of the week.  Went with OEMs vs rebuilding with the Gates parts.  Figured while I'm in there, might as well replace all the parts that wear. police

Black Interstate- got a deep cleansing bath (needed it; we got soaked on the ride home from the GOTF).

White Interstate - Desmogged and replaced a bunch of stuff (slow speed jets, throttle cables, air filter, fuel filter, intake o-rings, etc).

Transferred some safety chrome from the white one to the black one.

Current plans are to put the white one up for sale sometime in early May.

Had to replace the battery last week...unexpectedly died in a parking lot -- completely shorted cell -- got back on the road with a jump...

Replaced the OEM windshield with a Clearview Shield...

The OEM shield had started to loose its outer layer at 9 years old and was looking a bit shabby.

Think I'm gonna like the vent!   cooldude

Also cleaned under the tank and cleaned the K&N air filter...

I know you want to keep it like new, but really you need to the the plastic off.  You can see much better.   Grin

I put on two new Clearviews last year.  As the years go by, you don't realize how bad the old original shields have gotten.  Months later, I still marvel at the better view each time I roll out for a ride.   cooldude

Yeah, I really wanted to keep that plastic on to keep the new windshield as new as possible for as long as possible...taking after my dear departed aunt who would keep all her furniture covered in plastic...all the time!

Anyway, I had to replace my fancy chrome valve stem on my rear rim after only a couple years.  The gasket seal failed, so I went back to the OEM...

Gonna keep a close watch on the front one.

The rear end parts look reasonably clean before being cleaned...

Good time to clean up underneath...

I changed the oil in the IS and the 'bee Sunday.  The oil from the IS was dark and stinky, so I'll probably run it a short interval and do it again soon.

Except for a final drive check, mailing the seat pan off to Russell (might need a taller shield after that), choosing a daymaker headlight for my Josh adapter, and a deep cleaning, the 'bee is ready for InZane!  Can't wait!

Built a symmetrical center stand and has been in use for over a year now. Center stand can be used to lift the motorcycle from either the left or right side. It is not possible for this center stand to touch down while in the retracted position.

Made a reproduction of the Hondaline fork deflectors with a slight variation to fit closer to the run-turn lights and mount to 4 degree triple tree.

Designed and made forward controls; heal toe gear selector and brake pedal which can be used in normal foot peg position or on forward foot peg positions. Heal toe gear selector also dose away with the original long selector lever that has no support and improper pivot point.

Added a light bar for more lighting directly to rear of Interstate which can be moved to the rear of carrier. Wiring plugs in at same time when light bar is slid into place on the rear of motorcycle or to carrier and can be changed in less than five minutes. Carrier mounts into my own designed hitch which pulls directly in line with lower frame rails and moves a portion of the weight directly over axle. Hitch can support in excess of 195 pounds, way more weight than the motorcycle can ever safely handle! I use a 40 pound max weight limit. I can have different trunk boxes, either loaded for travel or stored away. Next will be my own trunk box. Not recommended without the use of a proper rated tire!

I changed all rear lighting to eight separate L.E.D. 48 array clusters and added a Stop Alert Flasher with g-force sensor.

I have traveled thousands of miles with the above add-ons; two up and camping.

I've seen this before, it is a work of art:

The controls look awesome too, I can't really see how the brake works, I think I
see a rod reaching back to the "real" brake...

I wish you lived near me so I could hire you to make a bracket for me, but I've got a few
leads for folks around here... when I get my bracket made, I hope it looks half as good
as your center stand!

No I do not move  my license plate. So far it has not been a problem. But I plan on putting it on my rear light bar, so it moves when I move the light bar to the back of the carrier.

Posted some on Facebook but this is the correct place.  Performed the rear end/splines maintenance to my Valk and put on a new rear tire.

The pumpkin splines appear to be in great shape at 100K miles.

Then checked the pinion cup and driveshaft

The pinion cup was weeping oil from the differential just as designed:

All in great shape, so used the same moly/lithium grease I've been using to lube them up and put it all back together.

The Austone Taxi tire really is more rounded than the Falken 512 it replaced.  And I liked the Falken.  Will report on the tire as I get a ride to Dublin in next weekend.

Also pulled the front wheel and was planning to replace the bearings, but the ones in are not showing any problems - smooth as silk.  So I just rebuilt the right caliper to stop it's chattering and then took it off the lift.  My greatest fear was dropping it when I was lowering it but no problem.

well, let's see, I installed Cyclops LED spotlights in the pods. I install Cyclops dual 7000 lumen headlights in the interstate headlight area. I replaced both throttle cables because the push cable had broken inside the sleeve. I changed out the throttle sleeve for a new one since my old throttle lock had worn out the original. But, with over 143000 miles on the bike, I figured that wasn't too bad.
Ride safe!

Serviced the rear drive while installing a new tire.  BnB Tom came over and made it a mini-wrench party.

Pics here: http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,18257.msg945305.html#msg945305

Oh yeah.  The Valk has been sitting for awhile and started leaking rear drive oil on the wheel.  Changed the main oil seal on the drive to take care of that.

This past weekend, I replaced the rotors, front brake pads, and replaced the Kury right grip that I destroyed trying to get the old throttle tube out.  Needless to say that it wasn't reusable.  I also updated my GPS maps for the first time in 4 years.  Ordered a replacement bladder for my 70 Oz Camelback and a new Joe Rocket jacket since the old one is 5 years old.  Heck, it has more Mikes on it than most people's motorcycles.  Hahahaha
