Joe and I are planning on participating in the Iron Butt Association Ride for Kids on Sat., Sept 19th.  The ride leaves the Allen HD dealership and rides to Van Horn HD before returning.  We leave Allen at 5am and have to be back by 5am on Sunday.  1079 miles in 24 hours.  Registration is $58 and includes the Iron Butt certificate, pin, and license plate frame.  Any other VRCCers that want to ride with us, just let me know.  We are staying in Allen near the dealership on Friday night (don't want to ride an hour to get there before) and then crashing (no pun intended) at the hotel when we get back.  There is safety in numbers so if you have always wanted to be a member of the Iron Butt, here's your chance. Hey Doc,
What is your strategy? Some people try to get a 3 or 4-hour nap in at the mid-way point.
Are you going to do that, or are you riding straight through?

We will play that by ear (and how tired we are).  Not gonna rush or ride fast.  A friend just finished his ride and had 6 hours to spare.  Not gonna do anything stupid.  I would rather not complete the ride than have an accident.  Actually plan on being back by midnight.  A little bit of snooze might be nice at the turnaround. If I didn't already have a conflict on the 19th, I might be in.  Good luck and have fun.

Re strategy, a buddy of mine did one of the 1000-milers out of the same dealership (Allen to OKC to Amarillo & back) on his Police Electra Glide by riding hard for an hour and stopping for 10 minutes, riding hard for another hour, and stopping for 10 minutes.  He says he finished in less than 18 hours and it really wasn't that hard.

Out of town the 19th for a men's retreat, but the one thing I'll share from doing the Iron Butt before is that the biggest time killer is what you do at gas stops.  Unless you're planning on taking a stretch, don't even take your helmet off - gas and go.  The other thing I do on long rides, including iron butt distance, is using a camelback so I can drink water or lemonade as I ride.  The mouthpiece will fit under a full face helmet just fine.  Fill it with ice before you start and you're good to go.  I like a little flavor so I put in some lemonade mix with it.

Below are some more details on this ride, which is to raise financial support for the Samaritan Inn, a homeless shelter in Collin County, TX  http://www.thesamaritaninn.org/  (Someone asked me last week why they call it a "ride for children".  I can't answer for them, but in addition to the support the adults get, it also definitely benefits their children which make up about 30% of the folks staying at Samaritan Inn.  And, no, it isn't related to Ride for Kids, "butt" should be a fine ride until the last few saddlesore hours. :-) [/url]).

The IBA has a set of tips on their web site that you might like to review.

Enjoy the ride and be safe!

September 19, 2009 (Saturday)

Ride will benefit the Samaritan Inn … the only homeless shelter in Collin County!

No Guestbook just email me at rideforchildren@aol.com.

This ride will depart from Harley-Davidson of Dallas in Allen (KSU) at 5:00 a.m. and will go to Van Horn, Texas Harley-Davidson and back to Harley-Davidson of Dallas in Allen for the SaddleSore 1000.  For those interested to complete an ‘Xtreme’ BunBurner GOLD 1500 you will go from Allen to Deming, New Mexico.  (For the Iron Butt Association's 29 tips for long distance riding, go to http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm.)

A disclaimer regarding the BunBurner GOLD:

WARNING: Before you can apply for Bun Burner Gold certification (1,500+ miles in 24 hours), you must have at least completed one of the following; a SaddleSore 1000, a Bun Burner 1500 (1,500 miles in 36 hours), a SaddleSore 2000 (or other similar IBA ride), the Alberta 2000, Minnesota 1000, TimberButt, Tarbutt Rally, Utah 1088, any Cognoscente Group event, any MERA event, or the Iron Butt Rally. IMPORTANT NOTE: Other 24 and 36 hour rallies qualify. Their omission here is not intentional, it is just not possible to list all qualifying rallies. If you are unsure if a rally you finished is acceptable, please contact info@ironbutt.com.

This event is open to ALL makes & models of motorcycles and will be held rain or shine. It is an Unofficial Rides and Events. This event is NOT affiliated with any dealership or club chapters.

For additional information and to obtain

the Registration Form & Waiver

I'll add to Sidecar's suggestions ..... you'll save time by gas and go, for sure.  And hit a rest area for the potty breaks.  It's a bit longer walk (which will feel good), no lines, no conversations, etc.   Carry some type of pocket snack food, both protein and sugar (peanut butter crackers worked great for me).

I did my 1040 miles in under 16 hours.  I find I make much better time riding alone.  Each person in the group adds additional time to the stops.  I was last out - first in.

My thoughts are be well rested, make sure your bike is ready, I had a envelope to put my gas receipts in and to keep them in order. It is not easy but not difficult either. I rode the super slab from Shreveport, La. to Van Horn back to Kerrville. Stayed at the YO and the General Manager was more than happy to sign my paper work. Stay hydrated and and ride safe.

when i did my iron butt it was on my 750cc shadow and i was with a group of other riders. we stopped every 100 miles. and i only got off the bike if i needed to use the bathroom. however i did combine gas and bathroom stops. be smart with your stops and if you need to buy something, know exactly what you want. if you need to refill your camelback, know what flavor of water/gatorade/etc is going in there. your stops are about  time management. caffeine is not your friend. so try to lay off the stuff now. stay hydrated and bring some hard candies too. i like sour, it has pucker factor and it can wake me up a bit.

also when you eat your meals, pay attention to what works best for you. pizza may not be your friend 45 mins later. you could be carb crashing.

music ... you may want to get that prepped today too Smiley

there's lots of advice ... the only thing i would add is enjoy the ride!

When I did mine solo a few years ago, I loved it, and wanted to keep going and get a Bun Burner but SWMBO cut off gas money upon my first 1,000 miles (Rowlett -> Amarillo -> Lubbock -> Midland -> Abilene -> Ft. Worth -> Home (Rowlett)...

One other note - I know you'll be in a hurry, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop and get a pic of your Valk in front of something that says Van Horn! Van Horn is one of the few cities left that's not been gotten for the Everywhere Texas Project!
