Whazzup????

WWW
« on: July 10, 2015, 06:06:49 AM »

Couple weeks ago, I had to replace the starter relay.  The bike shut down on me completely.
Replaced it and have had noooo problem.
Last night went downtown and had a burger.  Went to fire her up and turned the switch.  No power what so ever to anything.  Took the seat off and put the key in the ignition and turned it on so when it got power I'd see.  Fumbled with the wires and the lights came on.  She started right up.
I notice from time to time, the starter does not want to "kick' over.  But when I release and press the starter button again, it fires up.
And a week or so BEFORE the starter relay went out, I had a problem with the key switch.  I could not put my key in the slot.  I sprayed some lubricant on the key and in the slot.  Cant explain it but since then the key "doesn't" feel the same as it used to when I turn the bike on.
I know this is a boring read but I hate being left on the side of the road.
The bike has 110k miles on it.
Can the key switch "work and not work" causing the bike to have power to the light and then not have power?  Causing the symptom I am having?
Can the starter also do the same thing?
If anyone else has had the same problem let me know?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

your start button on the right handlebar requires service.
When this button is pressed it does 2 things.  It removes power from all non essential circuits (lights, radio etc) and engages the starter.
If the button get dirty, which it does, then power is cut off to the bike.  Turning the key off and repeatedly pressing the button will likely get you moving but disassembly and cleaning is required.
It can also be a sticky relay in the same system.

Also, I suspect the little "gate" at the ignition key slot has disintegrated and you've got bits of plastic, and possibly springs, down in the lock mechanism.  The flushing with lubricant may have washed them temporarily out of the way, but they may work their way back into a position such that the key won't insert all the way or turn easily (if at all.)

Best to get some dental picks and compressed air and try and fish the little buggers out.  As a last resort, you can remove the ignition switch for better access.  It takes a T30 torx bit to remove the switch (under the chrome cover.)
