Riding along on my 99 IS (lovin it of course!) and the speedo and radio both went down and back up a couple times the crashed all the way.  The radio still works but the volume won't raise with the speed (AVC mode).  It appears as if it is an electronic speedo with a sensor instead of gear.  I know that the AVC is speed controlled so I guess they are related.  I went through the small fuses and all were good.  I am guessing the sensor at the wheel but I am looking for prior experiences or suggestions.  Had a 97 Tourer but it had a gear driven speedo.

Yes check the output. The problem you are having is a sign that the alt may be going bad and not putting out the volts it should.

It could be all the things above, but, it isn't. The speed sensor on the wheel has stopped working. No sensor, no speedo, no AVC on the radio........just sayin' cooldude

Thanks all.  I have been thinking along the lines as Michvalk.  The cable assembly is $99 so not too bad and an easy job to change out.  Just wish there was a way to check it.

There is a way to check it. I don't know how, but, should be in the service manual. Mine did the same thing, and I just replaced my sender as well. cooldude

The sending unit is a hall sensor. I had an electronics whiz take a look at mine when it started the intermittent off on  speedo. There is not user serviceable parts inside . I attached a fuzzy picture of what's inside the box. New wheel sensor solved my problem

Just replaced my sensor ans still no go....turns out the drive tang is not spinning. DO I need to replace the whole drive assembly or is it apt to be the gear inside?

I think you need to replace the speedo assembly that sits on the axle next  to the left front fork. Sorry for the technical terms. Just did mine.

There is a "coupling" stamped out of soft sheet metal that connects the wheel to the speedometer gear. There is a good chance that if whoever installed the wheel the last time did not make sure the gear was properly mated with the coupling and the tangs are flattened and therefore not making the connection.

If that is the case, simply bend the tangs to make the connection. This happened to me the first time I removed and replaced my front wheel many years ago. Of course you will have to remove the wheel to verify and correct. cooldude

My comment was/is for Pastor John whose tang was not turning  when the wheel is turned. cooldude

Thanks all, it was the speed sensor, cable assembly.  took off left inner fairing unpluged it, swapped it out and put the cover back on.  Took 10 minutes and $99.
