You know the nut I mean, the one that holds the rear fender on the upper fender.

It's spinning, can't seem to get a tool on it, my car tire makes things too tight.

Any suggestion how to get up in there and get ahold of that square nut?

You could remove lower shock mounts and jack it up a little

or I would have done that. Thank-you for that.

I thought about taking off the top mountings and letting the wheel drop, just didn't want
to stress the u-joint on this 17 year old bike. Looks like that's what it'll have to be.

Let it down easy, or jack it up easy (and you can stop short of fully hanging).   And leave it in gear; you do not want the wheel turning (and the Ujoint turning) while it's kinked.
