My 1999 Interstate

« on: August 08, 2015, 04:24:04 PM »

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a mechanical throttle lock for my 1999 I/S. I'm not looking to sink the money for an electronic one. I had a Brakeaway on my last bike, but I see it is not compatible with the I/S.

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Thanks

A friend of mine had an IS with a breakaway on it.

You can find cheaper, but not in polished billet.  On both my bikes.

Cheapo Vista Cruise, but may work with no disassembly.

Traditional Vista Cruise (which looks better, and works fine, if installed upside down).

This Go Cruise looks simple, but know nothing about it.  http://www.2wheelride.com

This may be a little more than you want to do just to install a throttle lock but I have an I/S with a breakaway throttle lock. I had already changed the switch housing to the Chrome ones from Show Chrome which are designed for a Standard or Tourer. I did have to change my throttle cable to a Standard/Tourer when I changed to the chrome switch housings.

Read his post.
Yes the Breakaway is compatable with the Valk.

I put the polished Go Cruise on mine; it works well for brief periods to relax my right hand on longer rides. I also have one on my old CB450, because the Vista Cruise, like the one on my Intruder, wouldn't fit. The Go Cruise was only ~$37 on eBay.

I have the BreakAway on my Valk Interstate and it works perfect. They definitely do fit.

I bought a Vista Cruise also. Inexpensive and works fine for my Interstate. Took a trip from Orlando to Chicago the first of July and it did exactly what I needed it to do. Didn't use it constantly, just to rest the wrist.

The one I had on my VTX1800 was an other design. There were several linkage points. The newer ones have few of these linkage points and mounts to both the grip and the space to the left of the switch pod. Which one do you have. The current or the legacy version?

Thanks,

I have a Go Cruise on my Standard. It works great. I think I only paid $15 at the Laughlin River Run a few years back.

I had one of those throttle locks on my first GW GL1100, it was a little fussy in setting up. Maybe just getting too old?

I like a Throttle Rocker (1st Gen). I found it was more being able to release my grip from the handlebar that rested my hand. It was not uncomfortable to rest my palm onto the rocker to hold the speed I wanted. It can get in the way at time while riding in the city, but it was only about $10-$15.

Now with the GW GL1500, it has cruse control. Never did like cc very much, but I really love it on the mc. Able to release the right hand is great.

I have used the Vista Cruise that is shown in the top picture for years ( 16 years on a wing and 6 one current Valk)...... you just need a little space between the grip and the housing to install.... and you don't need to remove the grip to install.. if there is enough space.

Once it is in place and installed you don't even notice it, unlike the traditional one....

I think I actually got one made for a 1200 wing and had to open the hole a little with a dremel.. but it was like $26 buck and has never let me down other than having to adjust it tighter once in  awhile....

Mine is the one that doesn't have that extra piece that hooks to the other side of the switch housings.

Still using my low budget throttle lock after 3 years

I was thinking of getting a throttle lock, but not to excited about removing my iso grip after I glued it on really good. I ran across this on youtube and thought i'd give it a try.

Homemade Universal Throttle Lock

It works fine. It does provide me with some relief for that long ride and I can remove it at any time. It is not all that pretty, but it does work and the price is right.

Not cheap at $130, but looks nice, works well (mounts in reverse for an Interstate).

I believe the link is for 7/8 handlebars. You need one for 1" bars to use on the Valk.

Thanks, you're right. That is the "type"  and brand that I have, but one does indeed need the 1" variety.

If you decide to get the Vista Cruise and you have Kuryakyn grips there is a special filler that  is needed in lieu of the standard ones they ship.
