Do the front notches of the brake pads drop inside the gap in the middle of the retainer shown and circled in the image?

The entire front Tab on the brake pads rest in the circled part. I believe it is used as a spring to take up clearance and prevent pad chatter, or just to provide a more wear resistant surface for the pads to ride in as opposed to the much softer aluminum.  With out that clip, the steel backing plates on the pads would wear the Al in no time.

the metal clip gives a place for the not pinned end of the brake to seat in...it goes in just like its pictured
