I have a couple of times. Lodging can get sketchy depending on the time frame. A lot of people head there in the fall. The loop around Fort Davis is a good ride. Its a neat place to go in my opinion!

The state park in Fort Davis has showers and hookups. A really pretty drive is from Alpine to Fort Davis. The nights are filled with stars and days bring really deep blue sky.

Couple of years I have ridden out there in the Spring and visited there, McDonald Observatory, Marfa, Big Bend, etc. We have based out of Alpine and stayed at the Antelope Lodge. Recommend that place for a central location, good riding available for several day trips out and about.
We have done it during Spring Break. Sometimes a little chilly. I think it was 43 degrees this past spring when I mounted up before dawn for the ride home.

This is a ride I'd make since it's less than a day out if I needed to get back. In the spring is good.

On a trip to that area, try spending a night or two at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, you won't be disappointed.

If you are riding and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

I was in the Fort Davis area two weeks ago. I stayed at a motel in Alpine and did day rides from there. It was 10 to 12 degrees cooler there than in Austin. I was surprised that there weren't more motorcycles around, but it is the hottest time of year. The day I rode to Big Bend National Park I didn't see another bike in 360 miles. I recommend seeing that area before they build a pipeline there. It appears to be a done deal because I saw a lot of pipe staged near Fort Stockton. The pipeline is going to cross 3 of the main highways in the area and you can be sure the truck traffic is going to beat the roads to hell. There are lots of places where you can look in all directions and not see any man-made object as far as the eye can see. No side roads, power lines, cell towers, buildings, etc. That will surely diminish when the pipeline is built.
