my 99 Valk

Salem, Oregon

« on: September 22, 2015, 03:45:29 PM »

At the present time I have a 150/80-17 (Metzeler) on the front of my 99 Interstate and the road noise is extremely loud. the tires are new  (less than 500 miles), new wheel bearings (at time of new tires), new seals, head bearings, progressive springs. I also have a 1985 Goldwing LTD that has the Shenko 130/80-16 and the bike is absolutely silent on the road which makes it a pleasure to ride. I am wondering if the the 130 tire in relation to the 150 is what is making the difference. Has anyone run the 130's on their Valk and if so what were the results as far as the excess road noise? This noise is really getting to me.

I had the metzler 150/80/17 on my 2000 IS. Mine was noisy on certain road conditions, I could also feel the tire tread in slow turns (parking lots). I only ran it a little over 1500 miles because it was out of round and shock my faring too much at 70 mph.

Back to Avon now, very smooth and quiet. To answer the question the Metzler was not too noisy to bother me. I also years ago sprayed under coating to the underside of the front fender and under the gas tank to quiet down road noise.

I have a 130/90-17 Michelin Pilot Activ on the front (darkside) and it has slightly more road noise than the Avon I replaced. If that is normal I couldn't say since this is the first time I have tried this tire. I can live with it since it is minimal, but it was a bit unnerving at first. I do like the grab of this tire in all the conditions I have ridden with it (currently just over 8k) and expect to be able to ride this tire most of next season unless I take an Alaska trip. And 2 seasons is a first for any front tire for me.

I used to run Avon and have switched to Metzeler. I haven't found any real noise difference between them. I do prefer the Metzeler888 on the rear over the Avons.

Dunlop E3 is deafening...
Most reviews claim Avon is the quietest.
What do you like better about Metzeler, Lyle?

I don't find much difference on the front between Avon & Metzeler but I find the Metzeler 888 on the back has a stiffer sidewall which I think makes it handle better under full acceleration and they last longer than the Avons.

For what it's worth I'm running a  Shinko Tourmaster, stock size, on the front of my Interstate and it's very quiet.  Replaced a noisy Dunlop 404 (new) that rode like a brick.

I've run a dozen 150 ME880s on the fronts of my my Interstates, and I don't think they are noisy at all, new or worn. (stock exhaust/other with pigs cut off, though I often listen to the radio).  My hearing is not perfect, but very good.

Mostly what I hear is wind, but I wear half helmets (no plugs), and understand that full face helmets often transmit much more sound than halfs.
