Tucson - Its a dry heat

« on: October 19, 2015, 09:35:19 PM »

Found this pic on the Featured Pic of the Day today.
Anybody know who he is?  I'd love to chat with him about that 1800 (I think) swingarm, and the obvious, but elegant looking frame mod (on the right side) to allow the swingarm to clear.

TIA

Cruise over to the Ohio regional board and see if Bones/Wicked Wanda or Murdoch can put you in contact with Skull (Alan). He did what you're attempting to do. That pic may be of his father and his bike, but it's been so long since I've seen any of them I can't remember.

Thanks guys.

Bagger John - Do you mean this site?
http://ohioriders.net/

Did a search for Skull and Murdoch and Bones and Wicked Wanda - nuttin.
Did a search on Valkyrie - 3 pages, but no posts by any of those folks and no topics related either.

Maybe a different site?  There is no Ohio regional site on this board - at least not that I could find.

He appears to have solved the swingarm arc/frame conflict by...
cutting it off!  That works, as once the dual shocks are removed, the rear frame part becomes an appendage like subframe - only having to hold up the seat/luggage rack/fender/saddlebags.  That said, I would like to keep all that stuff.  I'm building a sleeper that will look (mostly) stock.

Would still like to chat with the owner about the lower and upper shock mounts.

This bike was in Monroe NC...The guy in the picture built it....It started life as a 98 tourer. The build was done when the bike was nearly new.
He worked at the local dealership and with help from others did it after hours in the shop.

I like it.

I think it sold for around $8,500.

Detn8er - Thanks MUCH for the pics. Very handy to see how others solved the conversion issues.

Some comments, as I think out loud.

The vertical member where he reinforced the tube above the swingarm pivot was to provide a place to weld in a crossmember for the top shock mount.

His top shock mount is pretty low - mine is about 8" higher, using the frame rails as a mount.  I'm not sure that is a stock shock, as I cannot see any linkage underneath, nor the Honda hydraulic pre-loader.  Any other pics?

He did not move the swingarm pivot, but it sure looks longer - must be an illusion due to all that air above the tire.  Certainly enough room for wheel travel!

He also appears to have the stock ride height, based upon the stock looking sidestand.

I'd bet he whacked off at least 50 lbs, prolly more.

All in all, a well thought out project with some good engineering.

Thanks again for the time to post these.  cooldude
