Get a heel-toe shifter.  Then you don't have to try to put your big foot in there.

The only issue with a heel/toe shifter is getting a big shoe or boot wedged between the front and rear pegs.

I have that set up and love it but my feet are small.

The shift lever is adjustable and does help somewhat in the problem. But on the other side you better have good flexibility in your ankle.

Cut the projection off then drill and tap for a bolt with nut that is long enough.
Cover the bolt with black hose cut to length.

I purchased just the heel-toe shifter.  I think it was $150 on eBay.  I used some mini floorboards that I had kicking around from my wife's old 750 Shadow.

I had a Suzuki 800 Volusia with the heel-toe shifter and it was also a problem with getting stuck and ankle flex so that wont work. It's not a horrible problem just not perfect
