Every time I go out in the garage, and see my bike sitting there that silver timing cover stares back at me.  Cheesy  I was thinking of painting it, but I am not sure how long it would last.  My next option is to powder coat it, but then I have to take it off, cover the hole, and find time to drop it off at the powder coater.  They open up after I get to work, and close before I can get there.  tickedoff  It's a pain in the butt, but, I need to do something, though, it just looks so out of place in the front.

It seems you don't want the hassle or down time of removing the cover to refinish it, so the best solution I can offer is to check out the cover offered by Kuryakyn. It's chrome and is applied over your stock cam chain cover with double sided tape. It should be easy to paint if chrome doesn't appeal to you. Best of all, you can return to stock down the road for resale, or if you just don't like the result.

I had it chromed on my 1800 wing (not the plastic Kury cover) actually chromed.
But with your blacked out look, yours would look better black.
Go for it.

Ken,

Anything to look out for when I pull it off?  I know that there are some pins that hold it on as well.  Is a flat screwdriver good enough to take it off?  I assume that I will need a new gasket as well?

Haven't had mine off since '08, so I may have a memory gap.
Yeah maybe some alignment pins, be wise to get new gasket, watch out for a small wire harness, ok to use a screwdriver carefully to remove. To pry it off, if you need more clearance, remove the lower front cowl.

"Plasti Dip" Maybe? A lot of guys use it on the wheels of their "tuner cars". If ya don't like the look, you can just peel it off. I think I'm going to try it on the front wheel of the F6B which has some scratches.

Will tire changing equipment damage the plasti-dip?

I have read a couple of posts on the FB, and Goldwing sites, and the consensus is that Plasti-Dip does not last very long.  Pretty much you have to redo it every year, but at least it comes off easily, and it gives me time to see if I really like the black there.

OK, I tried the plastic dip, and it turned out awful.  I cleaned the cover with alcohol, then I warmed up the cover with a heat gun, so that it was warm to the touch, and then sprayed the cover with a light coat.  I let it sit for a while, and when I went back to give it another coat there were a bunch of runs.  tickedoff tickedoff

I just said 'to hell with it', and took off the cover.  It is going in for powder coating next week.  crazy2 I will post pics of it when I put it back on.

I didn't think of this before but how about a wrap? The one they use on cars and signs that plastic film that can be stretched is any color you want can be printed on or even designs. I don't know about the heat of the engine but that might work easy to put on easy to remove and colors are no problem.

Well...I got my front cover back from powder coating, and it looks goooood.  Only one problem though....No one around me has a gasket so that I can put it back on.    tickedoff  Everyone that I called said that the gasket is back ordered until March 9th from Honda.  What the hell!!!!

I called several online places as well, and they didn't have one in stock either.  After a while I finally found one at Gearhead.com.  They had one in stock, but the shipping to Canada was crazy, so I had them ship it to my address in the US.  I never thought that I would have such a hard time finding a freakin gasket.  I was about ready to make my own.  Now, I have to wait until next weekend before I can put the front cover back on.  tickedoff

That sucks!

Oh well, could be worse, like waiting for parts during perfect riding weather.

Post a pic when you get her buttoned up.

I wonder if the part number varies by bike with the same engine?

bradrcfii,

There are two different gaskets.  One for GL1800's up to 2010, and then another one for 2012+.  The newer models have an extra oil hole apparently.

OK..ok....I couldn't wait until I got the gasket to see the finished product, so I put the cover on temporarily.  It will keep out the dust, and I get to see it.

If you look on my bottom signature picture you can see the difference.  I am happier than a pig in poop with the results.   2funny 2funny 2funny 2funny
